    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Fuel gauge vent

I have an '82 GS1100G. I'm not using the fuel gauge as I have changed the instrument setup, so have disconnected the wiring coming from the sender. Do I still need the vent tube running from it? I don't actually understand why it's there anyway! Please excuse my ignorance. Can I just plug up the hose or will my bike explode?

Examine the 'vent' carefully. does it look like it vents something? if not, what do you think it does?

hint... it isn't a vent.
 
It's not a vent, it's a drain. If fuel leks through the gasket, or the sender itself, it goes into that steel cup and down the drain hose to a safe area underneath the bike. If the hose is not there, it would drip on the hot engine below your crotch where all of those ignition wires are. Your choice.

Another tough choice, do I stop the bike first, or just jump off now?
 
That vent line, is just in case the gasket starts to leak at some point.
It is intended to divert the leaking gas from the hot engine.
It is also a good idea to aim the end of the hose to one side of the bike so that if it were to leak,
it would NOT go onto the rear tire. ;)

Ok I'll take the safety crotch option. :-) Actually I did once have a stuck float bowl valve on my Fatboy and it leaked fuel down the drain line onto the road. As you said, it's not good if it leaks in front of the rear wheel - every time I stopped at a light I would skid away on the green until I realised why I could smell fuel...
