Hi Everyone,

I am new to the GS world. Just bought my first street bike 1980 GS850L.

Past information on the bike is that a Shop did work on the carb (Cleaning...ect)

I have been driving it for about 3 weeks now. Everything has been working great on it so far. I drove it to work today and when i pulled into the parking lot it started to idle high and sputter. When i stopped and looked down fuel was pouring out of the airfilter. I checked that part plugs and they are a little black but i can tell cylinder 3 is not fireing. i replaced all the sparkplugs but it did not fix it.

What other things could cause the fuel to come out the Airfilter?

Also i checked the petcock and i am sure it is working.

Thanks

Yes third from the top. Underneath the seat is a label that has Suzuki trademark 1980. So that was my guess on the year.

I have been riding dirt bikes and working on motors all my life. So after i posed i decided to do a little digging my self.

First, the carbs were very dirty. So i cleaned them out and did an inspections. The number three carb float bowl was very sticky and almost sounded like sand was in the arm. So i pulled it apart and cleaned it. After i installed it all back together it seamed to run better also the number 3 cylinder was firing again. I think the float was stuck and filling it up to much so it would run into the 3 piston and flood it. ( i guess that can happen?)

Oh also i changed all 4 spark plugs.

What do you mean by smooth top carbs? i know they are mikuni and they have a round top that is smooth. Is that what you mean?

one last thing i know this question is not for this thread. I do not like how the air box is put together lots of placed air can get in past the air filter if not sealed with liquid silicone. ( it is almost like it has stretched out over time). I was thinking of doing the K&N pods or UNI pods. Will it changed the jetting alot?

Ok, you have the CV carbs (round top held on by 4 screws); best to head to those links and do some reading, especially if you haven't worked on this style carb before. Sounds like you have carb cleaning basics down, but these CV's can be tricky to clean thoroughly once gunked up. I'd get it running right with current airbox setup ( if possible) before contemplating pods as pods will require jetting changes.
Those links are lovingly maintained by guy with same bike so lots of great info for you to absorb. Can you show us a pic of your airbox ? maybe someone has messed up.

I will get some pics of all of it posted as soon as i finish my classes this week. Thanks for the info, i think i stopped the fuel leak but the bike just feels like it should have more power by reading what people say about the 850. I might need to look into adjusting the valves.

Hi! I have the same bike. Since yours is new to you, you have a lot of catch-up maintenance to do. Forum member BassCliff will be along with a mega-welcome containing pointers to everything that needs to be done. For a (disorderly, incomplete) preview, you can also see my project thread below in my sig.

Old carbs like these must be taken apart completely, soaked in a carb cleaning dip, and reassembled in order to get them working right again.

Yes, you have to rejet for pods. Like tom203 says, I would stick with the stock airbox, at least until you get it running perfectly as-is. That way you have a baseline to compare against. The stock airbox can be cleaned up and sealed, we have instructions for that. Involves weather stripping and possibly silicone.

The bike has more than enough grunt for most riders once properly maintained, tuned, and set-up, but don't compare it to anything modern in the same class. Its performance is substantially tempered by sheer weight! :)
