Gas additives

Hello all and Happy 4th,
What is everyone's take on fuel additives?
I hear alot of people run "StaBil" in every tank.
Also the same with Marvel Mystery Oil. 2 oz in 5 gallons of fuel.

I have run Lucus fuel additive in the past and each vehicle (including the bike) reacted differently. The bike coughed and sputtered until I burn out some fuel from the tank and added more gas. The further diluted mixture didnt seem to bother her anymore, but no real benefits either. I think I will jus stick to pure 89 octane.

I use stabil for off season storage. After I run out the tank with the stabil, I usually use MMO or seafoam in the gas.

Seafoam works as a cleaner & a stabiliser if you want to run something..... Not necessary in every tank unless you only use a tank every 3 months or something!

acetone works well. better fuel consumption, cleans your engine out too. use at 1% per fuel

I used to add acetone to my 94 Geo Metro, mileage went from 38 to 42 mpg. I loved that car.

Any dangers to the engine or carbs by using this?

I sure wish these guys would include a list of the compounds in this stuff. Seafoam is definitely the highest priced of all the snake oil.

none at all as long as you run 1% acetone. it actually does your engine good!

Seafoam is actually the only product I have used that did something. Recently, I was messing with 3 of my dual sports which had not been run in nearly 2 years. They would not idle and acted like clogged pilot circuits. I drained the carbs and added seafoam to the gas, more than recommended. All three cleaned out and ran fine after about 20 min. of messing around on them.

Tried it on a clogged pilot on my GS1000G which had sat 6 months, and it was no help at all.

I rarely use any additives, because mostly they have been a waste of time. Having Seafoam clear out my pilots was actually kind of fun.

I'll throw in my +1 for Seafoam. It is not a miracle worker but it will help clean up carbs that are working but not at top performance. I don't ride my 650 nearly enough and I am terrible at proper maintenance. Needless to say, the bike was starting to misbehave at idle once it warmed up. I figured I needed to do a rebuild which I didn't have time for so I dumped some SeaFoam in it just to try and buy one more season.

The bike purrs like a kitten now to the point that I may forgo a rebuild for quite some time yet. Like I said, Seafoam isn't a miracle worker and it isn't cheap, BUT as a general maintenance item like an oil change and filter, it seems to do a nice job keeping the carbs clean.

The material safety data sheets will tell you what's in it. NAPA has links to the sheets for each product. I just found that SeaFoam tests on animals. I don't care for that.

In the past 30+ years I have used em' all. Depending on what you expect to accomplish/gain by putting some "magic potion" in your tank depends on whitch potion you use.

For fuel stabilizing use fuel stabilizer. I uas the marine sta-bil because we have ethanol gas here and the marine version has better stuff in it to deal with the extra moisture the alcohol attracts and condences.

If you're trying to keep the valves etc decarboned then mavel, seafoam, ect are the choice for you. For decarboning I highly recommend ring free by yama-lube(yamaha) both for initial decarboning and maint. My personal experience is this stuff works noticeably better than the others.

For what it's worth, I've also read good things about BG 44K and Amsoil Quickshot SE additives and their carb-cleaning, combustion chamber scrubbing, and valve deposit removing properties. But I've never tried either. Seafoam has always worked for me, but it's pretty simple stuff. Check Seafoam's MSDS.
