As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hey All,

I am restoring a 1982 GS650gl that belonged to my father. I got the bike running, but it idles completely fine, but once you get it up to speed it sputters and dies after about 4 minutes. My original thought was that i need to rebuild the carbs, but when I went to change the engine oil, what came out was about 50% oil and 50% gasoline. That got me thinking head gasket or piston rings?? I've rebuilt carbs before but dont have much engine knowledge, do any of you have wisdom that could point me in the right direction?

ps- I am new on here and tried desperately to use the search function to avoid posting but it kept crashing the site...

More than likely your petcock is leaking.

Got this much oily gas out of my 85 750 because of a leaking petcock.

Welcome aboard, go ahead and introduce yourself in the owners section too.
What you have going on is a classic symptom of the petcock either leaking gas, or being set on prime. If the vacuum operated diaphragm in the petcock is rotted out or has and pinhole and leaks, it'll fill the bol on #2 carb, fill the cylinder and leak into the crankcase. The carbs are the other problem. They need to be cleaned and new o-rings installed http://cycleorings.com, the cleaning should be in carbuerator cleaner, not just sprayed.
BassCliff will be along with his megawelcome, he has all the info you need there.:D

WOW

does that mean its leaking into the carbs and causing them to overflow?

Ok I have parts on the way. Should i replace my intake boot o-rings as well?

Also i uploaded a picture of the beast :)

I certainly would. Since you're going to be in there anyway, and you don't know when the last time they have been changed was, it's a good idea. And I'd also suggest going through your airbox and replacing the old seals (you have a two peice airbox if I'm not mistaken, though I can't recall if it used rubber gaskets/seals), and while it may sound a little daunting, I'd do a valve clearance adjustment as well.

That's a fine looking bike-well worth playing catch up on maintenance. Remember, those tires could be really old- might look ok, but not worth the gamble on such a handsome ride.

I checked and it does appear to have a two piece airbox, (the box the holds the filter clamped to the box that connects to the carbs). I'm not sure about the seals in there, but while i have everything apart I'll be sure to investigate further.

I have no idea how to do a valve clearance adjustment, but i'm willing to bet if i poke around cliff's site I can find something. I appreciate all the help guys, I'm thinking it'll be good to get all these things done while everything is torn down!
