    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

grab handle

I recently aquired a 1982 Suzuki GS850L. It seems to be complete except for one part. I need the "grab handle" that goes around the back of the seat. It mounts just below the seat on each side and wraps up and around the back of the seat. Will "grab handles" from other years fit ?
At this time it does not run, but I would like to "restore" it to operating condition if parts are available. This will be my "project bike" for this winter.

I happen to have one that I removed from an '82 850 so we could install a Travelcade Easy Chair saddle.

Well that's a happy ending. :-D

When our GS's came out, lots of folks ditched the grabrails because they thought they looked cruddy.

But now when everyone wants to restore their machines, the first thing they go looking for are those elusive grabrails.

So I had a helluva time trying to get one for my GS1000S. Finally had to buy a whole rotten seat on eBay with a grabrail attached.

So Red Baron, it seems that you have landed on your feet with this one! Well done.

Please feel free to visit my little BikeCliff website, Mr. bwringer's website, read the Stator Papers and the Carb Rebuild series. These will help you get familiar with maintenance on your bike.

There's a short list of known issues with these bikes, especially if they've been sitting for a long time.

Change All Fluids - Crankcase oil, secondary gear oil, final drive oil
Carbs - clean/rebuild
Valve clearances - check and adjust
Petcock - replace if necessary
Airbox/air filter cage - install new weatherstripping to seal it properly
Intake Boots/O-rings - replace if air leaks are suspected
Brake Fluid - replace with fresh fluid (and eventually install braided stainless steel brake lines)
Gas Tank - remove internal rust and/or coat internally with your favorite materials (POR-15, etc)

You may wish to visit mr. robertbarr's website for carb O-rings and the like.
