A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Howdy!

I have a GS850 that is idling normal when it is cold. After a few minutes of warming up it idles very high (no choke). I have had the carbs rebuilt and I replaced all of the rubber between the airbox and the head.

Any ideas then please let me know! If you think its an easy fix and are on the north side of atlanta I will pay in beer for you to look at it!

How much higher is the idle? Have you tried to turn the idle down using the idle adjustment screw? It's pretty normal for the idle to change from cold to how by a couple hundred RPMs.

I get idle between 2000 and 2500 once it is warmed up. I had tried adjusted the idle adjust screw before the carbs were done. I will try that again this afternoon.

It is an '82. The carb mount o rings were replaced when my brother and I did all of the other rubber.

I did adjust the idle screw and it went down to ~15-1600. I have not had a chance to play with it more as it was raining when I rode in this evening.

It also runs great when putzing around town. It only has any issues that I have noticied at idle.

What is the setting on the pilot (mixture) screws? These are the screws on the top of the outlet of the carbs.

When stock, they are covered by plugs to seal them for EPA purposes, but they were FAR too lean for proper running.

To start tuning, turn them all the way IN until they seat lightly, then back them out three full turns. It will be a little rich, but it will run. When the bike is warmed up a bit, slowly turn each mixture screw in a bit, listening for best idle speed, then continue with the next carb. When you are done, you may find that the screws are about 2.5 or so turns out, but it's easier to tune from a rich-running engine than a lean-running one.

.

Check the seals on the head with carb spray while running and see if the idle changes. You may have pinched an o-ring or you have a leaky air box.
