GS replacement airbox question

Ok, I have an oppertunity to get an 82 GS850 for ~$300.

Only thing is, it has no airbox... I don't know WHY it has no airbox, just that the thing is gone...

Now...

Are the individual airboxes for the large GSes different, or will say a 750 airbox fit an 850?

I don't think it will, but I can't find an 850 airbox on E-bay, and the local salvage yard has heavily inflated prices ($100 for a used 450 wiring harness, etc)...

Why not just run 4 individual air filters? I just picked up 4 EMGO filters for a 79' GS1000 for only $35 off ebay....?

Wouldn't that require a re-jet?

Which reminds me, how can I tell if the carbs were screwed with (one motivation for removing the airbox, IIRC)...

I have an airbox available for sale. It's off an old 82 GS850 I used to ride, and which I parted out. I also have the frame that goes into it, and maybe even the foam filter itself. If interested, e-mail me directly at marinick@erols.com .

Oh you will see! When you find out just how hard it is to get a correctly running engine with those stupid frickin emgo pods you will go running back to your airbox like it were your best friend. Strangely shaped hard to manage friend but still a better friend to your engine than those damnable pod filters!

MAYBE I AM ENJOYING YOUR POST SO MUCH BECAUSE I HAVE FOUND THAT YOU CAN MAKE A STREET BIKE RUN LIKE THE DEVIL WITHOUT GOING FOR PODS.

ILL BE LAUGHING NOW AS I STRUGGLE TO MAKE ANY MODS ON MY BIKE.

THANKS FOR THE NEW ATTITUDE

Heh Scotty, I wish someone would have told me that before I got this stage3 kit and the pods. I'd have saved myself a world of stress.
Good luck with yours though, you've got years of know-how and understanding that I just don't have. And probably a lot lot lot more patience than me too.

So what makes them so hard to work with? The jetting issue?

Yes. The jetting.
I bought the dynojet stage-3 kit and the emgo pod filters and the settings they tell you in the manual are too rich. And from there the hell starts.
I've had to constantly adjust everything to make up for their incorrect instructions. Can you believe that the instructions tell you set the mixture screws to 5 turns out!! The mixture screws are barely sitting in the threads at that many turns out!
So now that I finally have the idle mixture close to right the needle settings are all screwy and too rich and have to be adjusted.
I figure that once I get that fixed right the main jet setting will prove to be wrong and I'll have to go out and buy all new jets for that.
At that point the fact that I bought the "Dynojet stage-3" kit will be all for nothing and I'll have to write them a nastygram.

I've been fooling with these damnable carbs since january and I'm no closer to running right than when I started.

Hey Dave,

I just wanted to mention to pretty much carefully evaluate the condition of the engine and bike. Could have possibly been run without air filter causing some major engine wear. If you can, check compression, overall condition etc.

Now you may be thinking. Your not concerned because you are getting such a great deal. Beware, depending on how much needs to be done, you can end up spending a whole lot of time and money getting the bike in top condition.

I have always found it is less painfull to spend more upfront to get a bike that had excellent maintenance and in great cond. Rather than go cheap with hopes that you can cure every problem and not get totally frustrated with the whole project.

I am probably in the minority in this type of reasoning. But I always end up having plenty of mods and enough repairs to keep me happy. Ending up with excellent bikes set up jsut the way I want when all is said and done.

Charlie

Umm, you don't have an aftermarket exhaust do you? You seem a bit jaded from this whole experience.

Very jaded and yes, no aftermarket exhaust.
I'm converting to the same mindframe as Landscapeman.
This is the last time I buy something broken and try to fix it.
Once I repaired the carbs I should have left it stock.

It depends on what you want out of the bike. If you are not looking for performance and are not planning on going with a 4-1 pipe and other mods, stick with the stock airbox setup. If performance is the goal and a pipe, cams, ignition and other mods are in the works then you must go with a jet kit and pod filters ( I have V+H pods) to get the engine to pump enough fuel/air. You might lose some driveability compared to stock, but the performance gained is worth the change if your goal is horsepower. Everything is a compromise-you lose in one area but gain in another. It does take some time and patience to get the jetting right with the stage 3 kit but the performance gains are worth it.
Good luck, Ed.

In order for a Stage 3 to work right, you need an exhaust, not just pods. The air flows in, but can't get out.

Damn.

I guess it will all work when I have another 200 dollars for an overpriced used ebay exhaust.

Dm of mD

I have NO plans for a jet kit. It is my understanding that there are different kits Stage one ---- stock motor, pods and exhaust. Stage three
for pods, exhaust, big bore kit, cams Every one trys to use stage three
on a stock motor and it ends up too rich
