The PO of my 1979 GS1000 had installed a thin steel wire strap on the seat to prevent it from going too far over vertical when in the raised position. It's only now while re-assembling it that I have realised why.
The rear seat hinge is badly bent and the mechanical stop piece on the hinge has broken its' welds. It seems that the rear hinge is expected to support all of the weight of the seat when in the raised position. There's a lot of leverage going on there and it looks like the rear hinge isn't up to the task.
Is this a problem experienced by others around here? I haven't seen it mentioned....
I've looked at sourcing a new hinge, but I can't find them on the micro fiche diagrams online (the hinge pins are readily available). Does anyone know what the correct part number is?
In the meantime, I'll attempt to repair the old one.
Thanks in anticipation.
