A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have a 1980 gs1000l and when i first start the bike until its up
to temp it has a lower surging knocking sound that goes away
when warm. should i start crying now or is this normal?

Howdy. Welcome to the site. Can you tell us the history of the bike as in what maintenance has already been done, are you the original owner or do you know what any PO has done, etc? Throw your location in your profile and maybe if someone is close by they can possibly lend you a hand.

Otherwise, Basscliff will be along later with the official welcome.

Greetings and Salutations!!

Hi Mr. tama777,

Try to isolate the sound. It could be "cam float" (from the top of the motor), "clutch rattle" (from the right side of the crankcase, as you're sitting on it), or it could be normal noise that goes away once the oil is fully circulated. We need more information.

But for now, let me dump a TON of information on you and share some GS lovin'. :D

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

EDIT: 7 minutes! (It's a slow day at work.) ;)

I know that it was owned by an older guy that took very good care of her.
I have had it for about 6 monthes and i bought her from mo brother in law.
it has about 35000 miles on it and pulls like i monster. But i dont remember
the noise when i first road it. I dont know if my mind is playing tricks on me
or what.. But the sound does quiet down.

the sound seems to be coming from the lower right side and again it is
a surging knock

Gona go for a ride. its 42 outside....freakin heat wave. Hope to hear from
all of you and thank you for any info.......

Does the sound go away when you squeeze the clutch lever?

How does it sound if you pull the oil fill cap off?
BE CAREFUL TAKING THAT CAP OFF while the engine is running. :o

Not sure about the 1000L, but it shouldn't be that much different than my 850s.

You take the cap off, there will be flying oil coming out of there.

.

knocking

knocking

It does not stop with clutch action. just woundering if a little
thicker oil would make a difference. But dont want to geuss.
I read somewhere that there are just a noisy motor. I use 10 40

Sometimes the big clutch hub nut comes loose and it makes a noise like that.
It's easy to fix.

The clutch hub noise won't go away when warm so that may not be it, although it's a very common noise.

In general you need to do maintenance on old bikes. Have you adjusted the valves and synced the carbs?

No I have not.. But its a low knock down on the right side.
And sometimes it will do it when the rpm's drop coming
to a stop....I hate the sound. Would it be a good idea to
take off the clutch cover and check and if i do what am I
looking for? If i recorded the sound is there any may to link
it to this sight?
