If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

GS450 Pod Filters and Jetting

Here's the issue I had with the dodgy pods I initially had on the GS500 carbs... to demonstrate, I removed the rubber ring from the pod and sat it on the intake of the carb. You can see how the lip interferes with air flow to the various inlet passages on the carb:

While the K&N's and APE pods have no shape internally like a bell mouth or velocity stack, they at least do not impede the air flow.

I'm very happy I now have velocity stacks on there instead.

And I just read the link 8Ball posted... he already has pic's like the above but I missed that...

The K&N's do have a flare inside the filter, but it is not as extreme as the OEM velocity stack boots, or a set of velocity stacks.

Really? The 550 pods must be different then... I used universal oval K&N's on the stock carbs and there is definitely no internal bell mouth on those, just an opening into the filter. Are yours 550 model specific rather than universal ones?

Technically, the kit I got consisted of two different universal filters. Two short and two long, so the outside ones don't hit the frame. I don't know if it is specifically for the GS550 alone.

I tried to put a photo of the bevel inside in the thread I linked to, but it is hard to see:

But, basically they cut a 45 degree chamfer on the inside of the boot, on the inside of the filter. It is not as effective as a true V-stack, but it does eliminate the square edge of the rubber boot as air passes into the boot. It was on all four of the filters that I got in the kit.

I dipped the carbs, installed new o-rings and put in 137.5 main and 40 pilot then threw on the cheap pod filters. It seems like it's working great so far, but I have yet to take it out on a ride. It might be a little bit rich, but I cant say for sure yet. Next I'll change the oil and check the valve clearances.

Update: I took it for a ride and it's running good. Better than before, but before wasn't anything spectacular. Acceleration isn't great from 4000 to around 5500, but all in all, I am happy with it. The best part is the sound: "foooom." Before putting the pods on I checked if the rubber bit got in the way of the air passages. The rubber on my pods, thankfully, didn't look like the pic Pete posted.
When I changed the oil this time I went with Rotella Diesel oil, instead of the cheap stuff I keep around. The 450 deserves it. Now I just need to do the valve clearance.

After having the pods on for a couple weeks I found that the carbs are too much weight for the boots alone. I am going to need to support them somehow.

Here's my solution after finding how badly the 450 carbs had distorted the intake boots... this is with the 500 carbs I have on there now.

I got some scrap 2.5mm thick aluminium and bent it into a hook shape, drilled a large diameter hold in one end, and simply cable tied it to the frame. They sit nice and solid now.

That's about what I did, but instead of the aluminum piece I just tied to the bracket thing between the carbs. Some time later I might look into a more "professional" solution than zip ties, but this gets me around town.

Im just new to the forum. I have a GS450L and my new pod filters came in today. How did you do any re-jetting to your carbs? If so, how much? Thanks

I have yet to jet my carbs but 6sigma racing will build a custom jet kit for your bike for like 60$. I put pods on my GS450t and to counter act the effect I just cut the bottoms out of a couple beer huggers and slipped them over the pods. I have yet to have a problem with performance. The bike is a little loader and has a noticeable gain in acceleration throughout the throttle range.
