Gs850 rear tire locking up???

  • Thread starter Thread starter Nate12b
  • Start date Start date
You need to find a second hand set of gears OR replace the bearings on the one you have... The bearing is shot if it was locking up !!!!!!

From the start of this thread, you said....

"I just recently bought an 82 gs850 and now when I try to ride it the rear tire will lock up after moving about 200 feet. The weird part is that after I let it sit it will roll again. "

Can you explain this more? Were you coasting to a stop when it locked up? And locked up, as like brakes applied, or just sudden drag, any noise?

The secondary drive was what had only a little oil and had shiny flakes in it. The hole I was talking about was just the drain for the starter. And the tire locked up while I was rolling to a stop, there was no other sounds besides the the rear tire squealing.

I took the rear pumkin apart and it looks brand new there is no visible problems. also the bearings look great.

That's good and let's hope it stays that way. Back to secondary drive area and those shavings, cuz this is a likely candidate. If you remove fill plug, can you see (or feel) inside for the bevel gears? be very careful if you rotate the drive with body parts inside. My 650 is slightly different so I'm unsure of this . Anybody you know have a flexible lighted scope to view insides?

No you can't move the gears threw the fill plug nor can u see anything

Do you have the ability to LOOK at pictures????
Go to that link!
Are you deaf to the written words that have been posted over and over?
If you are drowning and someone hands you a rope, do you just HOPE for another rope?

Your bearings are GONE!!!! Clear?

Daniel
If nate12b recovers from this, I bet he pulls his secondary drive off.

after those comments, i relized why i normally don't get on fourms and ask for help. there were many times i asked how to change the secondary gear but nobody ever said anything. you would rather just say something negative, and act like im a dumb a$$. This will definitly be my last post on this subject.

Daniel being Daniel.:(

Have to admit that I've felt the same way as him sometimes here on the board. He posted a very informative link that was skipped over.

I've never removed a secondary drive gear but my understanding is after the swingarm is removed you can access the bolts holding the gear to the case. Some people have had to release tension on the case half screws in that area before the gear assembly can be extracted. Overall, not a difficult task other than a fair number of parts need to be removed to gain access.

Everyone has their own way of expressing- don't take it personal. 7981GS had a good link- I missed it and you probably did too with all the info folks were throwing at you. It probably would have got my attention right away if he had said something like "look what happenned to me in May ". Checking the pumpkin was a good place to start - you would have to do it anyway. Sooner or later, you would have moved up the drive train. I've been on here a year, and can tell you that the veterans try hard to give good advice without sarcasm.

I just experienced the same problem with my 1100. Riding slowly through a parking lot and the rear locked up like i had stood on the brake. It was making a metallic scraping noise from behind the motor just before but no booms or death noises.

Be thankful it didn't happen while going any faster than you were. I'd start by draining the rear end and seeing what comes out, if anything. I had the rear end of my 1100 lockup at 60mph when a bearing seized. I was able to rebuild the rear but needed a doctor to rebuild my ankle. Good luck.

Thanks, didn't know if the 850's and 1100's were the same back there. Didn't really want to tear anything apart without having an idea of what's going on inside.
