I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Okay, buddy of mine had an extra set of o rings. He has an '81. Picked those up from him, took off the carbs. Clean as a whistle. Sprayed some carb cleaner around intake manifolds, nothing. Sprayed around the air box cover connections, and idle went up. Any way to fix?

Another question, what size should the main jets be usually? The two outside carbs are 115, and the two inside carbs are 125. Maybe 125 in the outside carbs, and 135 in the middle two?

I believe the 83 is the same as my 82. If you are running stock airbox and exhaust, they should all be 115.

Thanks for the info, I spoke with the previous owner, and he said he opened up the exhaust a bit. And at 70 plus I'm running a little lean. Should I up the jets?

He drilled out the smaller holes.

What you saw and sprayed in the carburetors was useless. Anything less than a 24hr. soak in carburetor cleaner with the rack torn down is a waste of time. It's what you can't see. You need to use the foam stick on weatherstripping to seal the lid. I have seen pristine looking carburetors boil out crud when put in the carburetor dip and the spray carb cleaner is only good for flushing out the carburetor dip and surface cleaning before blowing out with compressed air..

I didn't spray anything in the carbs. I put them in the ultra sonic cleaner. Jets were clear, diaphragm pliable, etc.

I missed that. That is probably the best way to clean them, but not something everyone has access to. I would look for weatherstripping that can be cut to emulate the original lid seals. That may fix the lean condition. If not I would avoid anything that would increase airflow since the exhaust has been drilled. Shimming the main jet needles so they are slightly higher (more fuel) might cure it all together.

I didn't take the snap ring out to look at the needle set up on these. Is there an e clip, or just one set position?

All my experience is with VM carburetors and the needles are notched. I believe yours are fixed but can be shimmed. I have heard you can get the washers at radio shack in an assortment pack. Hopefully someone that has that experience will chime in.

There is an E clip, but there is only one groove to put it in.

The process of "shimming the needle" can be a bit confusing if you don't fully understand how the needle works. In stock form, there is a thick nylon spacer above the e-clip and a thin metal washer below the e-clip and a spring that pushes it all up, against the stopper. Since you want to raise the needle, you need to remove the nylon spacer and replace it with a few small washers whose total thickness is about half the nylon spacer. Everybody suggests "Radio Shack" for washers, but Radio Shack has severely limited its locations recently. If you can still find one, they have a bag of assorted washers for just a few bucks. The smallest ones in the bag work perfectly, and three of them should replace each spacer on the needle.

.

Okay, fixed an exhaust leak, seal airbox, and raised the needle with washers from RadioShack. Sputtering is gone, and no more need for choke at highway speeds. thanks everyone for all your help .
