If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hole in air filter box - why?

The air filter box on my bike has a 4"x2" hole in the bottom which is covered by a wire mesh which is held on by duct tape. I'd always assumed that the hole was part of the design and that, over the years, whatever held the wire mesh on had broken and been replaced with tape. Despite having twice renewed the air filter, I've only just noticed that the hole is jagged and very obviously not part of the original design.
Why might a previous owner have decided to do this? If he'd accidentally made the hole, wouldn't he have patched it with something solid rather than mesh? Should I cover it back up?
The bike is a 1982 GS750 TZ. The air filter box is under the seat and over the battery. The box isn't square, it extends to the right, over to the back of the right side side cover.

Puzzled and embarrassed for not spotting this sooner.

Mine was the same way when I got my 80 gs750. I think when the previous owner put on the 4into1 header, they needed some more air in there and made the original opening bigger. I am sure the technical guys will be able to answer a little better, but that's my guess. sounds like someone made yours with a 'custom' screen.. mine just has a jagged opening.

hmm...iirc, my 81 750 has two small holes on the part that comes down from the main body. Maybe they made it one large?

Thanks and thank goodness for that. It makes sense, and I don't have to fix it. :)

Hole or no hole, the bottom line is this: How do your plugs look??

Jeff

the stock opening in the factory air box is a bit restrictive, cutting a hole in the bottom alows the air box to breath better.

Hole in airbox

Hole in airbox

I am an owner of a gs 1150 and if I had a hole like that my fuel valve would not work. lol

Holes,holes.......

Holes,holes.......

I believe the 'modification' while well intentioned, is rather unnessesary(SP?), many an engineer I'm sure spent many sleepless nights crunching flow, noise and torque variables by the shape & volumes of these 'boxes'.
However, once a modification is made, all those careful calculations get thrown out the window & some tuner gets stuck trying to come up with the 'best' new configuration.

Thanks all. The plugs are just fine - a nice light, uniform, tan. That's one of the reasons I'm pleased no one's told me to fix the air box. I try to fix things that are wrong but I'd much rather fix a problem than something that's not right. I think that makes sense.

You could take the goverment's approach to problem solving, "If it aint broke, throw money at it till it is, then stop everything and leave it that way till election year, make a promise to fix it."

holes in airboxes

holes in airboxes

when we wuz kids and these bikes wuz new we used to remove the airbox cover to get better airflow. One of the magazines got 150mph out of a 82 kat that way if i remeber correctly...

You must be making an impression - I thought of you when I wrote it. :)

This was a standard mod years ago when everyone was tuning these bikes. The larger hole allows air to flow into the airbox easier, whilst the standard airbox shape creates a still-air compartment so that the carbs are sucking in non-turbulent air, yet as much as they need. This is why when you throw your airbox away and run open carbs the engine never runs as smooth. On todays Pro-Stock dragbikes they use a large still-air compartment. And who was the original top tuners of GS1000's? - Terry Vance & Byron Hines in the Pro Stock class! Guess who was the first to cut hole in airbox?
