    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

How long before I should recheck valves?

I adjusted my valves before I got it running. Since then I've noticed a small oil leak from the valve cover gasket. Is there any sort of break in period for something that's been sitting a while? The leak is small enough that I could let it be if I'm going to be adjusting them in the near future. Don't want to take the cover off twice if I don't have to.
 
You can check all the valves in about 5 mins. once the valve cover is off.
 
Is it a new valve cover gasket, or an old skungy one that came with the bike?

They do dry/bake out and crack over time. Your service interval on valves is 5000 miles, if I remember correctly. How many miles have you put on the bike since you got it?

The valve cover doesn't take that much time to take off/put on, so you can pretty much choose to do the work on any miserable, wet, fall day when you're not out riding. As Ed says, slip a gauge in there to check the clearances, cause it never hurts, and it only takes a moment. If you are putting a new gasket in, you can coat it with engine oil/anti-seize or some other material of your (or the GSR community's) choice to help prevent it from adhering to the metal surface, for the next time you need to poke around under the cover.
 
If it's been sitting a long time I'd recheck them in a thousand miles or two. Certainly check them if I was in there to fix a leak anyway. Did you use a new gasket last time?
 
It was a new old gasket if that makes sense. Wasn't used but bent and brittle from bumping around in a box for a decade. Maybe I'll just make an educated guess at a shim size or two I'm sure they'd get used eventually. Its my first bike have put anything close to 2000 miles on it. Oiling the gasket sounds smart the one I took off originally had that brown gasket sealant on it, that sucked taking off.

Likely why it's leaking, either you missed a spot of sealer or you gouged the surface a little bit. Either way it can be fixed.
