I'm pretty sure a hand impact driver is the one tool you can't do without for working with these old JIS screws. Even little ones like those used to mount the R/R and fuse box can strip their heads if you don't use a little penetrating oil after 30 years. But two gentle taps and they're incredibly easy to remove. I don't know if my battery powered impact would have done the same but I do know that my plain old Philips had drive wouldn't.
