Installing Dyna Coils?

I am installing Dyna green coils on my 79 750L. Looks pretty much like the coils will fit right into the mounts where the stock coils are.

My question is, which way do you put them in? My guess is that the brass threaded holes where you connect power face the back of the bike.

Also, do the plug wire towers aim up or down?

How do you know which plug wires go where (like for the left coil, which wire is 1 and which is 4?).

This is probably obvious but sometimes I am a slow learner.

Thanks for the help!

Rick

Mount them however space allows. Usually with the wires facing down. It won't matter which plug wire goes to which cylinder on each coil as long as you get the coils going to the right pairs of cylinders.

Sorry Rick I tryed looking at pics of my bike and could not tell how they are set up.

So after I attach primary wires to the left coil- and connect the plug wires, it doesn't matter which one of those goes to cylinder 1 or cylinder 4? They can be exchanged?

Yes. I install the left side coil for 1 & 4, right side for 2 & 3. The electrical power & ground wires feeding the coils don't matter which hole they go in as there is no polarity on the Dynas. They will work either way. The same goes for the plug wires. As long as 1 coil's set of plug wires go to 1 & 4, and the other coil to 2 & 3, you will be fine. Ray.

so are they going to fire 1,2,3,4 or will they fire (1,4) and (2,3)? or what ever order but you get my drift. they dont fire 2 at a time do they?

Hi Rick,

I've mounted a few pair of those Dyna colis on various bikes - just make sure the leads that power the coils do not touch/ground out against the frame.

Not sure how much room you have on your 750, but sometimes the screws on those Dyna coils get very close to the frame & will actually arc to the frame on a rainy day. I had that issue with my 550L, easily fixed with a some black tape.

Also, make sure you "seat" the new plug wire ends into the coils well - they can be a little stiff & hard to push all the way home...

Good luck,

Don't they make a "liquid" tape or something you can smear on the connections too?

Don't know. I'm not saying you need to put anything over the connections, I'm just saying to give it a good look & make sure they're not touching the frame.

I could actually hear my 550L arcing against the frame while the engine sputtered...

they do fire two at a time as others have said, as long as (1 and 3) and (2 and 4) are on the same coil you'll be fine.

i've even swapped the coil leads to identify problems with firing and it still ran fine.

1 & 4 fire together then 2 & 3.

Maybe my next upgrade is adding dyna coils then. I didn't realize it could/would be that easy. Mine plug wires are molded into the coil. I don't care much for that. I've been thinking about this topic for some time and now i just might do it.

Installing the Dyna S was pretty easy too; of course, only after I called Earl last night :o.
