    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

L to G conversion?

According to the fiche on Alpha Sports, the part numbers for the frames are:

I'm sure that someone on this forum can describe the differences between the two frames. Some information from the factory shop manual:

The G has dual front disk brakes, while the GL has a single disk system.

I think that the GL has a lower seat height than the G.
 
Wow... thanks for the info. Just with these numbers, it would seem prudent (and cheaper) to look for a G model.

just because all the mechanical spec's don;t line up, is no reason to give up.
If you like the G for the look, then the switch is more than feasable, so long as you are cleaver about a little bit of drilling and welding.

If you want your bike to perform like a G.. welll.. tough nuts

I want "to perform like a G...", but, hey, what do ya' want for FREE!? The bike was literally given to me. I reiterate, 'guess I'll have to look for a G- and I think I found one, only its a 750...:grin:
 
Biggest handling differance between the G and L is that the L model has leading axle forks. This is what gives you the wheel base, and trail difference. Get a pair of G forks and you'll be well on your way.
 
There are many more GS650GLs out there than GS650Gs. You'll eventually find one, though. I'm pretty sure that the seating position can't be changed without changing the frame. I think that foot pegs are mounted differently, and that the bars are different. The gas tank on the G holds about a gallon more than the tank on the GL. Changing from one to another could certainly be done, but unless your time is free, you have a good shop and like big challenges, you'll be better off to find a G. And having owned a 650G, I think you'll love it.

I think of it as almost like sex change surgery. If a male gets his package removed and takes hormones, he'll still need dozens of surgeries in other spots to stand a chance of passing as a woman.
 
L/G tanks

L/G tanks

The G tank is significantly longer than the L one, and won't fit without relocating a bracket and other "sex change" stuff. I thought about installing a G tank on mine to get the extra range, but abandoned the idea after some measurement.

My current approach in now more to just enjoy it for what it is while it lasts - clean up, shine up, refresh the paint and so on.
