    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Any advice?

I have a leaky gas cap and I can see that you can disassemble it. Anyone know where to find a new rubber piece, or will I have to replace the whole cap?

I checked out www.cmsnl.com and saw the gasket you are referring to. It shows on a different style cap for a smaller cc bike. When I search that site for a GS1000e, the fiche shows a one piece cap assembl and no gasket as a separate part.

Do you know if I can disassemble mine and use the part # you have to replace the existing one on mine?

The part number for my gas cap is 4420049810
 
The gasket in these caps (the later sort-of-rectangular style) is not just a flat donut of rubber -- it's sort of a hat shape, with a metal reinforcing ring inside.


There are two solutions:

1) Don't fill your gas tank so %$#@! full. In hot weather, this will lead to a crotch full of hot gasoline no matter how good your gas cap is. (Shortly after you fill your tank with cool gas from the underground tanks, it will expand and overflow as it heats up. Someone does this at every GS rally for some reason.)

2) Buy a new gas cap. If you get one from Suzuki (about $45-$50), you can transplant the guts of the old lock so you can keep the same key. (The new gas cap comes with its own new key.)

You can also get an aftermarket gas cap with key here for $27.

It's unknown whether this one is a close enough copy to transplant the lock guts.
 
I used one on my 79GS850 worked fine, should work on your 1000 too...
Caps are shaped different, but the filler hole is the same size
