I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Left hand controls compatibility

Last night I got home only to find that sometime down the road I lost the switch for the turn signals and high/low beam light on my GS850GL daily rider. Now I'm stuck with no turn signals until I can replace it. Kind of dangerous at night.

Anyone know what year/model switches would be plug and play compatible? This is a 1982 model with the choke lever on the left hand controls. Anyone have one for sale that's compatible? I did post a request in the parts wanted forum.

There were a couple of different variants of that switch, main difference being a different harness and/or without the choke feature. You should be able to just find any similar switch that's intact and pirate the parts to rebuild yours if the donor has the different harness. The choke deal is a bolt on accessory that you should be able to move over if the new switch doesn't have it. One key detail regarding disassembly is that the square button needs to be rotated 90* before it can be extracted from the housing. Any switch you purchase should be taken apart, cleaned, and reassembled after liberal application of silicon grease. It's sort of like a jigsaw puzzle inside but once you figure it out it's easy enough. I posted some photos of the guts just the other day if you get stuck...

I don't think the earlier versions had the mounting provisions for the choke lever. I see a lot of later model (83+) 550E and 750E's on ebay but almost nothing for the 82 to 83 GS's.

I know my 82 GS1100E has the choke on the assembly. So one of those may work for you if you come across it.

Ed posted pictures for me last week (Thanks!) when mine when I took it apart...
Before I was able to find all the scattered parts (took a while), I was looking on eBay. I think the GR650 left controls will work. They have the same wiring connectors and I believe the cable for the choke will work also. There are 2 for sale on eBay. Both look kind of ratty though.

Reuse your housing then.

Is the switch plate the same on earlier models? If so I didn't think of that. Might open up some possibilities.

How is the slide switch removed. I heard something about rotating it 90 degrees. Do you just rotate it and it pops out? Do you rotate it clock-wise or counter clock-wise?
