A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey Everyone, I am trying to diagnose a charging problem and was hoping someone would have some insight. I bought a new battery about a month ago and it drained on me after about two weeks.

Charged it back up and ran some tests such as starting does not drop it under 10 volts, so it should be good right? it sits at around 12.6 with bike off and idle. When I rev her up to 4,000 or 5,000 the voltage only goes up to about 12.8 or 12.9. I have tested the three stator wires and they all had same amount of current.

I also checked the grounds on the R/R. Please tell me I do not have to buy a new stator... Also I don't know if it is relevant to this problem but looking at my plugs it appears 2 & 3 are running rich.

If i were to check my coils how would I go about that? Any other ideas on what might be happening?

On the GSR homepage you will find a link to a series of articles that will lead you through troubleshooting your charging system. Look for Stator Papers.

Good luck.

So far I have gotten through that chart except for phase C. Has anyone else had this happen? most likely R/R if it is not over 13 Volts at 4-5000 rpm's?

I'm pretty sure the Stator Papers calls for you to check the resistance across the stator leads to judge whether or not it's shorted. Did you do this yet? If not, this is a critical step. You also need to check A/C output voltage on each leg of the stator...again, per the Stator Papers.

Could be...

reg/rect, but it can only function properly if its getting enough voltage from the stator.

You say you get the same current from all 3 legs of the stator, but what is the voltage?

The upside to all this is if you haven't yet already replaced the R/R or stator yet, you'll probably be due soon anyway.

The voltage back at the battery currently is too low to keep it charged.

Might want to check that your R/R is grounded to the battery too....

It was either 74.xx or 78.xx across the 3 legs. I have checked the ground on the R/R as well. The ohms between them were within that range of 0.5 and 2.0

Little update... This morning I went to start my bike and it lit for about two seconds and dies out throttle or choke did not help. Usually the bike wants no choke to light and then pull it on. So I just held the starter down and it would crank for a couple seconds and then bog for like a quarter second in that sequence for about 20 seconds and it finally caught and was normal from there on out... Any ideas?

sounds like ur chasing a couple of things at the same time!

Starting problem could be related to charging problem, or not. Difficult to say. I would start with your knowns and then move forward.

From your description of the charging system, it looks like the stator is okay. Order a new one either from Electrosport, or better yet, bwinger on this side (I think) has a more reliable honda solution. I've not done the honda swap yet, did replace mine with one from Electrosport, like $100 or so.

While you're waiting for it to show up, charge your battery up fully.
I'd put the bike on prime for minute or so to make sure there's gas flowing.
Then crank.
Listen to the cranking sound. Does it sound strong?
Does the motor even sputter like its trying to turn over?
The bogging down you describe-is it the starter bogging/stopping cranking?

If it doesn't start, you'll be in new territory for me!

Next you'll probably get suggestions from others with more experience to check your plugs, make sure they're not fouled. THen check spark at one of the plugs....

Good luck!

You mean the R/R or the Stator?

The bogging down I was saying is more like a sputter like it is trying to start, the cranking sound is strong every few nights I throw it on the charger so just because I don't know how long it takes to drain the battery with this situation going on. usually in the afternoon it starts up right away without the sputtering and starting problem after sitting for like 8 or 9 hours so it must not just be a cold engine thing.

I can check spark but know right now the plugs are not fouled. 2 & 3 are running rich which somehow I am thinking could be a bad coil? How do I check them if you know? and what is the easiest way to get the tank off and I have heard some people keep it rigged to the bike so they can still start it to test with the tank off, what is the best way to do that?

Thank You!
