    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Lugging knocks from the Clutch?

Well I read a few forums about noises and well I don't know if they are the same.

This is my first GS so I do not know what sounds are "normal" and while getting it running I had a rag around the clutch lever and bar holding it in to free up a hand for starting. Well tonight I took the rag off and adjusted the cable and noticed a slight lugging type knock when in neutral and the clutch engaged. It wasnt consistant sort of off and on, fade and come back. I didn't rev the motor much as I am still t/t the electrical and no need to rev the bike much more then 3k.

After I noticed the lugging clunking. I put the bike in gear and let the clutch out to see what it did.. Well it still lugged and you could see it in the chain slack as the chain jumped each time. Pulled in the lever put it in neutral and let out the lever, and no lugging, waited a few seconds and the lugging/clunking came back.

I put fresh 10w40 oil in, it was full on the sight glass, but I only added 3 quarts when the manual said 3.49 w/out filter change and 3.6 w/ filter change. So the oil could/is about 1/2 quart low.

Is this sound Im hearing normal for the bike?
Would the 1/2 low be lacking in the tranny causing this?

The bike has been sitting for many, many years before I got it. The oil I drained out was clean, not all messed up and full of metal.

The bike was firing on 2 clys when I first noticed this, and as I relized the pulse tube for the petcock was open I pluged the tube and got 3 holes firing... Cly 4 is not getting gas and is dead.

Would a miss maybe cause this knocking lug? It seemed to me it could? In the afternoon Im going to pull the carbs again and check the pilot jet as I think the rubber plug may have come apart a little and blocked the pilot jet. Hopfully the cyl starts firing and the lug goes away.

I'm just hoping for a little heads up to ponder.

Oh, the knock sounds to be coming from the clutch side, but we all know its almost impossable to tell where deep sounds come from.
 
And what kind of bike would we be talking about?

Ratte noises from the clutch are common with the large GS bikes, the 1000 8V seems to be particularly prone. The clutch backing plate develps play relative to the basket. The clutch hub nut likes to back off as well so if the noise is present I suggest you pull your clutch cover off and do an inspection to make sure nothing particularly bad is happing inside.
 
A miss would cause the backlash in the drive train to become more noticable as with each miss the drivetrain would get ahead of the power delivery causing the knock when the power comes back.
I would diagnose the reason for the miss and then check that the chain is in good shape and properly adjusted, as well as looking at the rubber cushion blocks in the back hub to see that they have not shrunken or broke.
 
The bike is a GS1100 '81

I will have to get it firing on all 4 first and see if it changes anything. Its kinda what I was thinking.
