Missing air filter housing - need help with options

Hello. I just got my first ever GS this past weekend - 1981 GS750E. After taking the seat off I noticed that the air filter box is missing and I know these bikes definitely need the correct air mixture restrictions. The bike will run.....barely without it. When I put my hand partially over the air hole, the bike roars to life. I have been looking for an OEM air filter case set as described in the microfiche. I've had no luck finding one on Ebay or any NOS from parts vendors.

My question is - what can I do for a filter setup until I do find the OEM filter cage? Can I attach a decent pod filter to the input of the air box?

(The part I am looking for is #14 in this diagram | http://www.partsoutlaw.com/oemparts/a/suz/50d40081f8700230d8b4e2ca/air-cleaner)

Thanks

Tim

I'm having a similar issue with a bike I just bought. It's all podded up and I want to find the stock airbox. I've seen a few on ebay, though.

I have heard of people attaching a pod filter and then taping off part of it until it runs adequately.
Partzilla says:
This Suzuki 13700-49810 SUPERCEEDED BY 13700-49830 is used on these models and components:
You will also need to fashion a lid, as they are also made of unobtainium. Even duct tape will do.

Hi there. We have the same bike! Got any pics of yours?

I'm pretty sure that air filter housing is used on a bunch of GSes, so it might help to expand your search a little. (Cross-reference the parts numbers with the diagrams, though.) (Edit: koolaid_kid beat me to it.)

The ones I saw on eBay looked both a bit rough and expensive.

Also try the Parts Wanted forum here if you haven't already.

You could probably get away with slapping on a large pod filter but then you're into rejetting the carbs as well so if you're not an expert tuner, you'd probably just be trading one kind of pain for another.

My bike had K&N pods on it when I got it. Hated them... I acquired a plenum from another bike.

Then did some measuring and research on K&N's website and mounted this right on the plenum where the (#14) airbox should be.

Works great, and I still get the benifits of a free flowing air intake system with the volume and smoother flow of the plenum added to the mix.
Just an idea for ya.

If you want, shoot me a PM, I'm sure I can find the part number of the filter I used...

I did the same thing on my '79. I didn't use a K&N, it was some other re-usable oiled air filter that I put a hose clamp on to clamp it to the plenum.

I ran a similar K&N on my GS with the airbox installed but not the lid. It did not run properly until I fashioned a lid for the airbox. Then it ran great.

Thanks all for the suggestions - I really like this forum! I will have many more questions as I go while bringing my "Suzy" back to life!
