If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hello everyone.
My first motorcycle back in 1985 was a used 1981 GS650G black in color I purchased it early in the spring of that year, near the end of that summer I laid it down late one nite as I was taking a turn and hit some gravel and it slid into a curb while I barrel rolled down the street. The insurance company totaled the bike, I really liked that bike.
I used the insurance money to help buy a new Yamaha 1100 maxium I had that bike until about 1995 when I sold it.
Then after about 3-4 years (around 1998) of not having a motorcycle I started getting the urge to buy a used motorcycle then I remembered that there was a lady down the street that had one for sale earlier that summer out in front of her house.I did not even know what kind it was,but I went to the house that it was in front of and inquired about the bike to see if she still had it for sale and she did.
She open the garage door and I could not belive it there sat a 1981 GS650G black in color the same as my first Bike some 18 years earlier,so I had to buy it( $650 ).
I rode it for a 3-4 years then it became unreliable so it sat unused until about 2004 when I tried to get it in running condition or I sould say the bike shops tried without luck still unreliable. In 2005 I purchased a new kawasaki vulcan 1600 I just sold it on 4/19/10.
So I found this GS forum while researching what might be the problem,so far it looks to be stator/RR.
It has a very weak spark because any buildup on plugs and it won't start or very hard to start( been using starting fluid) and it has been that way for years along with not charging the battery.

Good luck in sorting out the problems! Looks like a nice ride.

Welcome. I love my Black 650g. I just replaced my r/r with FET style. It's been working great so far. Good luck.

Tom Obucket,

Welcome to the GSR.

I had a 82 650G from new for 20+ years. Never had to do much on it.

I would say that maybe you have two problems. 1)Charging system problem so low battery voltage. Need to verify that with volt meter (sounds like maybe you have). And 2) Ignition problem. But maybe #1 causing this.

You have a multimeter?

Look for stator papers on the GSR main webpage (not the forumn, the webpage). Also look for BassCliff BikeCliff webpage; he has a tutorial with lots of picture for how to check the bikes charging voltage. The stator papers is more for how to troubleshoot to find the cause of the low voltage. Check into all this, and then post specific question in the Techinical / Electrical section.

Plus it has been pretty much just sitting for about 6 years, which could present some other problems, like carbs needing to be cleaned out. Is also something back on main webpage about that too.

Have you had the cam cover off and check the valve clearance?

Thanks for posting photo.
Looks like take care of a couple of these problems and should have a nice bike.
Lots of folks here willing to help.

Markelville anywhere near Brown County? Bedford?
Are a few active GSR members around Indy area, and some in nortwest IN.

I Don't have a multimeter yet I may barrow one.I have been reading the stator papers (bikecliff) just have not started in on doing anything yet.The carbs were rebuilt a few years ago.If I clean the plugs with wire brush/scotch bright it runs great for a short time.

I live just outside Oaklandon, shoot me a PM if you would like an assist.

Please, for the good of your bike, THROW AWAY THE STARTING FLUID.

Hard starting when cold is generally caused by tight valves. If you don't know (or can't remember) when they were last done, it's past time.
See any of the service manuals for the official procedure. BassCliff has tutorials that enhance the process. I have another "tool" to offer, see my sig.

Cleaning spark plugs can be an exercise in futility. Far better to spend less than $10 and get new plugs.

While you are getting a good start on basic maintenance, go ahead and clean your carbs.
It will require a can of Berryman's "dip", a set of o-rings from cycleorings.com and about a week of your time.
Well worth it all.

While you are waiting for your carbs in the "dip", clean EVERY electrical connection on the bike. Start at the headlight, go to the tail light.

Your bike will thank you for this. You will then thank us for this. :o

I live about 3 miles from George (Koolaid) as well. If you need any help, just ask.
