A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Can someone help me understand where to adjust my timing for a 1982 GS 1100 shaft drive motor? I there is a shaft that spins between two metal points held my 3 screws but I had no luck moving them or removing them. It's just discouraging at this point. Motor back fires after synching carbs and switching jets. It was running rich now its lean. Mechanic said it's the timing but he couldn't figure out how to adjust it.

Please help.
Thanks!

Your bike has electronic ignition. There is no timing adjustment. If the carbs were done properly, and you haven't adjusted the valves you need to do so. The only way timing could be off is if your timing chain jumped. Nobody messed with the automatic timing chain tensioner did they?

The top middle screw has a mark under it. Make sure it's lined up with the mark above it.

Wow! Thanks. I am looking for dumb-down directions deliniating diagrams, dogma, documentation, discerning ....whew, the ignition system. I have an 83 1100 GL, and there is a wee little mark at the top of the backing plate that lines up with a minescule hash mark above it. Not exactly as you described on your bike, but I believe it serves the same purpose. I found some stuff on Mr Cliff's site By Mr.Matchless that hopefully will help walk me through it. I noticed some nasty harnesses under the coils. There is a white one that has a split in the plastic on the mail end that I am going to pry apart, clean , and try to doctor, among other things. I was concerned someome might have fooled around with the breaker plate, or whatever it is called. So thanks.

Looks like your safe there

However, ignore that "mechanic" in the future

Go thru your steps to GS redemption per BassCliff's list and ask us any questions you may have

Dan is correct, the timing is not adjustable so something else is wrong with the bike.
