    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Firstly, thanks to everyone here. This is my first post but I've been reading posts for a couple of months.
I own an 82 GS650E, it was in great shape with only 12,000 miles on it. I broke what I thought was a gear last week, but it turns out to be the output shaft in the transmission. It seems the part is discontinued. Any ideas for replacement parts? The dealer told me to piece the bike out on eBay, but I really like it.

Before you part it out, try contacting your local salvage yards. The ones near me have everything from complete bikes down to handlebars and chain guards. Search around and try to find a replacement. It would be a shame to get rid of a bike you really like just because of one part.

Try a different dealer, the parts are available for our old bikes, if you have any trouble ask Dink and he will get you the part number, he works for a Suzuki dealer
 
Do not part it out if that is the only thing wrong with it!!!! 8O There are always parts available somewhere.....you just need to be persistent and keep a sharp eye out. Monitor Ebay for certain, check www.bikebandit.com for OEM replacement parts, www.riderparts.com , www.oldkawman.com , www.motosalvagenet.com , www.bikeboneyard.com , and many more out there. Certainly some of the old men here can also help you out :wink: with your searches. Many of these dudes are deep in the parts network, also try the search forum feature....you can't be the only GS owner with this problem. Do not kill your GS because of 1 broken part, especially if its otherwise clean :cry: . TIME TO DIG DEEPER!!!!

Thanks for the support, I have submitted my request to 2 used parts dealers on the internet, I'll keep you posted. I too just stare at the bike sometimes, my girlfriend thinks I'm nuts.

I contacted Dink at work to check that the part you are looking for is available and it certainly is, it will need to be ordered from Japan but a good dealer should be able to get it for you. I checked the price for it at bikebandit and it is expensive when available through them, cost to Oz is $224.00 plus tax which doesn't sound too bad.

I agree with everyone not to part it out if that's the only thing wrong. I think th dealer wants to sell you another bike.

I do a lot os shopping - well mostly looking - for parts on ebay. I've noticed lately that there have been several transmissions for 1100's in there. I didn't notice any for 650's, but I don't search for them either.

Find out from some of the more knowlegable here if there are any other transmissions that are interchangeable. Maybe a 750 will fit - I have no idea - but if it does you have a better chance of getting the parts that way.

My suggestion is, if you get a used transmission, swap the entire unit, not just the driven gear set.
 
I have a 82 750 motor, (don't know if it is the same). if you need the shaft, but I won't be taking it apart for about two week if you can wait Is yours a chain or shaft
 
Definatly don't part it out. If nothing else the parts are available as individual pieces. I just had the same thing with a GS1100GK that I've bought. I replaced mine with used ones from a guy on here. You should be able to pick them up used for under $100. I'm not sure if the ones from all the shafties are the same gear ratio or not so you might want to make sure that it comes from another 650. If you do the work yourself it isn't all that hard. Hardest part was taking all of the motor mount bolts loose so that you can jack the motor up a little to get the old one out and the new one in. I haven't gotten mine running yet. (Broke the upper rear motor mount bolt while trying to get it tourqed to spec. and wasnt' even close to having it tight when it snapped on me.) :oops: :oops:
 
If the bike has been riden very much since the gear broke chances are the other hypoid gear the output gear meshesup with could have the teeth partially chipped off. That is what happend to mine. complete job was around $400.00 and I did the work, but it was worth it. I bought my gears from suzuki.
 
Try a cycle shop like the one I use with a complete set of microfishe. First Turn in Crowley, LA can probably order it for you and have it shipped direct to your house anywhere in the country. Give them a try (337) 788-1818. They take major credit cards.

So far it looks like I may have found the complete transmission (both gear shafts and gears) used for about $300. I have also found a complete bike for that price, but I have to see how and how much it would be to get it across country. For the record, the bike is a chain drive.
 
A chain drive GS650E? I didn't know the beast existed!.......I'm not doubting anyone, but I thought all 650s were shafts....... Can you post a pic?

Sorry to disappoint you but I have a chain driven GS650E sitting in the garage.
 
Don't part that bike out.
The 650E model is a pretty rare bike.
I've never even seen one in person, only pictures.

Scads of 750E models.
