A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey everyone! Long time lurker. This forum is fantastic. I'm a PhD student studying chemistry at the University of Texas at El Paso. A month or so ago my dad gave me a 1982 GS1100GL that the PO laid down and then parked for 10 years. As a starving grad student (I jest), I was more than happy to tear her apart and fix it up. Can't beat free. So far I've spent hours cleaning the engine because of a bad oil leak from a bad tach cable seal. I've also rebuilt the carbs after ordering an o ring kit and the forks. Now I'm just waiting on funds to buy tires, a battery, handlebars, and some miscellaneous gaskets and seals. Anyway, I love this site and have really enjoyed reading about everyone's builds. Wish me luck I guess!

Well that engine looks pretty sparkly! Good work. I have the G version of that motor/bike and it is nice. I hope your not new to riding........Welcome!

Welcome. As they say "free is for me" nice work so far. Good thinking using the utility sink drain plugs in the exhaust.

Welcome! You must be a big guy. That bike looks tiny under you, or it's the camera angle.

I don't want to start a full build thread or anything but wanted to update my bike. I've got her on two wheels, brakes are rebuilt and bled, exhaust crack welded up, exhaust mounted, carbs cleaned and mounted, new battery, stator rewired, etc. I'm having a great time. I got her started but #2 is dead. Spark is good and fuel is good. I got the valve depressor tool finally in the mail and checked clearances. All are too close but the intake on #2 especially so. Thankfully there is a shop here in El Paso that will swap shims with me! Great guys at EZ Rider. I also just finished the 2 day motorcycle safety course required here in Texas. Great fun, gotta get me a Honda rebel for putting around. Can't wait to get my M endorsement tomorrow!

Fyi not a new rider, just never got around to getting the endorsement. Oops.

Fantastic work! this thing is going to purr like a race horse pretty soon. You've sure done some cleaning, that engine looks new along with the pipes. Great to see someone doing all the right maintenance, and on your own! congrats.

She's on the road! Safety inspected and registered today. Sounds and drives great. Still things to do but so far I'm very pleased.
