GS 1100 GK jump start attempt with car, now no fire. Starter spins well with new battery, fuel at plugs. What component could have been damaged?

Greetings and Salutations!!

Hi Mr. DMHolt57,

What Mr. Octain is eluding to is that if the car was running when you tried to jump start the bike you probably fried the bike's regulator/rectifier unit. But don't worry. They're not too expensive to pick up used on eBay. Let's hope the igniter is not damaged. Those are very expensive. But it can be replaced with a new ignition from Dyna-tek (the Dyna-S) for about 1/3 the price of an igniter.

30 year old bikes need lots of maintenance before they are safe and reliable. The most critical items, to get them running anyway, are properly cleaned carbs, properly adjusted valves, properly sealed air intake system, and properly cleaned electrical connections, grounds, and charging system. Read all about it in your "mega-welcome" below. :)

If you are here you probably have a 30 year old motorcycle that needs about 20 years worth of maintenance. You'll find all kinds of helpful tips, procedures, manuals, diagrams, "how-to" guides, etc, in the links below. Let's get started.

Let me dump a TON of information on you and share some GS lovin'. :D

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

Yes, the car was running according to my brother. I bought it as a project and have had shop clean the carbs and I cleaned and red coated tank, had been Kreamed and was coming off in sheets, replaced the starter and battery. It was running when I bought it but not well over 4000 rpm. Bought a new 1100gl in '83 so have a nostalgic urge to get this one back up and running. :)

That's all fine but you still have not answered if the car was running when you jump started. If it was you probably fried the r/r and possibly the igniter.

Hi,

For starters, have a look at the carb cleaning procedures on my little website to be sure you have performed them properly. Aftermarket "carb kits" are not recommended as they contain an incomplete selection of inferior parts. Normally all you need is an O-ring kit from http://cycleorings.com, the proper tools, and a bucket of carb dip. Clean and re-use all of the internal jets, replace all of the internal O-rings. If you must replace a worn or broken part, use only Suzuki OEM carb parts. They just work.

Then proceed through the maintenance lists in your "mega-welcome", properly addressing each item. After completion you should have a safe and reliable motorcycle. Skipping steps or taking shortcuts will be frustrating at least, and hazardous at worse.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Pull a spark plug and put it in the spark plug boot and ground it to the head.
Try to start it and see if you get a spark to jump at the plug.

Fried igniter...

If you ever HAVE to jump a bike from a car, don't have the car running. :)

I can say I have heard of this happening but never knew anyone who it happend to.
Cant say that anymore.

...so if it turns out to be the igniter, do I go with the dyna setup?

The R/R has no bearing on the bike running. You should be able to remove the R/R and still run. A good battery will operate the ignition just fine for a while. The R/R is part of the system to keep the battery charged, but it does not make the bike start, nor does it make the bike run. It regulates the AC electricity produced in the stator, and converts it to DC to keep the battery charged. Its possible that you smoked an ignition part or something, or it could be a coincidence, but it is not the R/R. The R/R NEVER is working until AFTER your bike starts anyway. That is when your alternator starts working.

I smoked a solenoid on my CBX when I started by jumping it off a car. I figured that was a coincidence until I smoked another one on a GS1000G jumping it off a car. I really don't understand why it did, but it has happened to me twice. See if you have spark. I'm not saying that the R/R can't be fried, but I am saying that the R/R isn't needed to start and operate the motorcycle, until the battery goes flat.

Why not check the ign fuses first. For an 83 you would have to retro fit a mechanical advance unit along with the dyna.. And maybe a spacer for the ign cover

It is the 82 GK2. Will take a pic and post tomorrow. Thnx for all the responses. :)

First of all check for spark like Chef suggested. If no, look at the fuse like Lynn suggested (or just check that first).
