    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

oil change nightmare

I need help guys. A simple oil change revealed some probs for my new old girl///
Look at the pics. First I stripped one of the oil filter studs.
Then I notice the oil fill is all messed up/
What can I do now?????????

Replace the stud, replace the oil filler, or the clutch cover, whichever has the problem...
There are no pics, either.

those caps arent that expensive, why hack one up like that???
 
Someone before you has ruined that cap, they are cheap, and the same for many years and models, someone here will have an extra for you for sure.
Don't get any metal bits down into the engine, vacuum or blast it with air to get it all it off before you remove it..
 
Just bought it but I am looking at getting a new DL 650. I paid $1100 + sales tax plus registaration was somewhere around $110
New back tire and 7 down sprocket for fuel economy was another $175 or so.
The bike runs so smooth and the od reads 22000 +-
It all adds up to $1500 for the bike. I would sell it for that if the money was in my hands. It is a great bike and my wife wants it, but I am inches away from a DL 650 so the money would help.
I will have these oil issues worked out this week.

DL 650 is a nice ride.
Where are you located?
 
20 Minutes from Green Bay.
I could pick you up from the airport....
I will even buy brats and beer.
I would not hesitate to drive this bike to CO and back. It really runs great.
I bought it from the Origanal Owner with 3 miles on the title. He took care of it but I wonder why he skimped out on the oil filler?
 
you say you changed your back sprocket. did you change your chain and front sprocket at the same time?
 
Are the studs easy to obtain?
I am not sure how I am going to get the oil plug off. I assume it is threaded? When I turn the bolt it just keeps spinning.
 
i would put a blunt punch (or similar) to the outer end of that cap (where it's broken), on the right hand side on your photo, and tap the punch with a hammer, so the cap rotates counter-clockwise

studs you may be able to find at a hardware store that sells metric stuff
make sure you use loctite when you put the stud in so it doesnt come off when you undo the nut that holds the filter lid on
replace all three, they are old

From your descriptions and pictures, here's what I suggest. I hope it helps.

In the picture below, you'll want #10 (PN 01421-06208). You may also want #11 and #12 too.

In this picture, you'll want #8 (PN 09259-30001). I think #9 is included, but you should check to be sure.

Good luck. Just looking at your bike, I was guessing the year. But these parts are the same for most GSs.

Wow thanks for the info. I just picked up the parts. Have to get dirty tonight. Every day the bike is off the road it is costing me $6 in gas.

Probably not, I always take the long way home on any bike, there goes the $6. :-)
