I did an oil and filter today and when I pulled the old filter, the metal end with the rubber boot stayed in the hole stuck on the post thing. What gives? The other metal end was loose too. I'm pretty sure I gave the last filter's gasket a wipe with some fresh oil before installing.. I'm positive I lubed the new o ring. Has anyone had this happen to them? It was a fram filter I bought at canadian tire. Certainly not specialty but WTF?

Wasn't that big of a deal to pull out with a fine screwdriver but my first couple of attempts were with my bare hands. Aiee! it's hot in there!

I've replaced it with another quality fram filter. Hopefully it won't happen next time.

"Fram" and "quality" don't belong in the same sentence unless the word "crappy" is also in there.

Do some Googling -- they make some of the worst filters imaginable.

With that said, I've used Fram filters many times in my GS simply because the quality of the oil filter doesn't make the slightest difference in a vehicle where the recommended oil change interval is only 2,000 miles. I install a new Suzuki OEM o-ring for the cover every year and throw the crappy Fram o-rings in a drawer. Why I save them, I don't know, but I've got quite a stack of them.

Here in the US, Napa auto parts stocks a very nice GS filter made by Wix. Emgo and HiFlo are also fairly nice quality, but only found at motorcycle shoppes.

You could also just order a batch of OEM Suzuki filters from your local friendly Suzuki dealer or favorite intarwebnet parts source.

Never use anything but genuine parts, not worth it, Seen a CB750 production race bike destroy it self after the rider put a dodgie filter in. Wasnt a good sight. Lasted 3 laps in a 6 hr race.

that happened to my bike the first time i changed the oil... didn't know what type of oil filter the previous owner used. ... P.O. must have used a fram...

I have been using K&N, been ordering them from K&N.com. I order a few at a time. Has not happened since.:-D

Not sure I have used a Fram filter in the GS, but I used to use the all the time in my cars, trucks and vans with no problem. I think the difference is in the construction. The car filters are of the spin-on variety and sealed. The bike filters have the element glued between the metal caps and the glue tends to come undone.

For what it's worth, I have seen many such rants against Fram filters on the GoldWing board, even though they use spin-on filters. :-s

.

right now i use a K&N oil filter. 8 bucks i think. dont know how that fares with other prices.

Place the words "Chinese counterfeit" in your vocabulary.

They have gotten so good that the boxes occasionally exceed the quality of the originals in even factory accessories. If you bought your Fram from Walmart or some cheaper source now you know why it was cheaper. Most places you could return it for a new one. They may have a whole batch of bad ones and need to know they are getting shafted by their wholesaler.

The Chinese have fooled even factory dealers with their packaging and product appearance on reusable items like brakes, bolts and filters. The scariest thing is the fasteners that shear with their fake strength markings.

I have used Fram for years with no issue in cars and trucks but stick with HiFlo bike filters from a local shop because they come with a new shaped o-ring. The Suzuki dealer sells his filter without an o-ring. So that begs the question: "How often does one really have to change the factory o-ring?" When it won't seal? Obviously the local Suzuki Dealer isn't changing the o-ring when he does the oil change so there you go!!

Another opinion page for sure = o-ring life.

Duff filter

Duff filter

Back in the early 1980's (1982/3 to be precise) there was a batch of filters that made it to Suzuki dealers marked as genuine parts. After fitment the paper filter colapsed and had a nice tour of the working parts of a GS engine only to be discovered at the next oil change.

Happened to me on a GS1000E at the time and cost me a couple of days of the dealer stripping the bike to clean the oil ways.

Hope today that doesn't happen again.

I paid $9.99 at my local canadian tire for the part. I actually checked when I finally got the old one out (Also bought at my local c. tire) to see where it was manufactured, and yes, it was china. Perhaps C. tire got duped and ended up with some pirate parts. Interestingly enough, the new filter was manufactured in korea. Not exactly a paragon of manufacturing virtue, but maybe it will stay in one piece...

fram filters

fram filters

I got a bad fram last year when changing oil in 1990 Ranger. carried 50 lbs. oil pressure before but after filter change only had 25 lbs. After doing a lot of other things to it, I put a motorcraft on and that fixed the problem. Had a bad fram in 1968 also, will never use another fram.

You don't need an oil filter on your bike. Or at least I've had a few bikes where the previous owners have thought it ok to just toss the thing away.
Actually the absolutely key thing with oil filtering on high mileage GSs is to drop the sump and clean the gauze filter. It never ceases to amaze me just how much crud gets collected down the bottom and if that filter gets completely clogged - and they can - you're in the toilets big time.

i gotta question.....can anyone recommend a good quality filter that comes with the cover o-ring? i change mine every time, my poorly machined slot in my filter cover causes it to flatten unevenly, and i have yet to get a reused one to seal. i know i can order them seperately from my dealer, etc, but, my local charges, like, 4 dollars for the frickin' thing. i used to use an stp from the local auto place, till they stopped carrying them, now you will tell me thay are worse crap than fram, and maybe they are, but they held up so far and came with a new oring. and were only like 4 dollars. from the dealer the suzuki part and oring cost me almost 15!!! and took a week to order!!!! they had emgo, but, imo, they are garbage too, and dont have the oring. which i didnt realize until i had the oil out. which resulted in another trip to town. NOT on my motorcycle. i know, i should order a bunch online and just have them around. but does it really have to be so hard? ok, ok, whining over.

Napa auto parts sells a very nice GS oil filter made by Wix that comes with a decent o-ring. If your town has a stop sign, you probably have a Napa.

It's PS4931, if your bike uses the same filter and three-lobed o-ring as a GS850. Order up several -- they usually only have one or two on the shelf, but they can get more in a day or two.
