A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Does anybody know the part number for the complete oil filter housing on an 80 GS850, and what can I expect to pay? Just want to know if my bike is better off parting out or fixing.

All this for a broken off bolt in the upper right stem hole, and my impatience. Drilled through the side wall.

do you have a photo of the mistake. it just depenes on the who, what and ware of the drilled hole.

yes, it can be repaired but the cost of the repair is the thing. it could be as simple as welding the hole closed and redrilling and taping. the next choise is replacing the lower case haft.

Re: Oil filter housing

Take the cover to a welder. It is a very very simple thing to get a hole filled in.

I'll probably take the welder route. The bottom gasket is leaking oil anyway, so I'll be able to kill two birds with one stone. Unfortunately, the Clymer manual I have doesn't have procedures to take the lower case half off. It looks like a weekend long P.I.T.A, but neccessary. At least I feel assured that the case isn't totalled. Hopefully the welder's union won't drain my wallet.

Thanks for all your help.

With regards to the lower case, is removing the engine required or is it a separate piece from the trany case? Hoping for the latter. Probably a dumb question, but the Clymer manual doesn't have a very good engine diagram.

You will need to drain the oil remove the exhausts, the carbs, the starter motor, and all the engine side covers (clutch, ignition, stator& countershaft) remove the clutch hub(and the plates that cross over the case halves behind the clutch hub). Remove the motor from the frame and remove all bolts from the top case(note the two under where the starter motor was) now turn the motor upside down 8O remove all the bottom bolts(again note there are two inside the sump) Provided you havent missed any bolts it is relatively easy to seperate the two halves ( I find a wide paint scrapper very helpful at this point)

I feel your pain riptide. My first 750 had this problem. I managed to jerry-rig a temporary fix to finish the season, but the cases should be replaced. If you decide to fix it, PM me. I've got an 850 motor with good cases. I don't need it & would be happy to sell it - Cheap.
