    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Could someone please tell me (definatively) what size chain and sprokets to buy to change over my original chain from my 1977 gs 550.
(Page 95 of my repair manual is missing.)
I don't wish to change the ratio, simply replace what I have with the newer 520 (is it?) chain, and front & rear sprokets to match.
I see everyone recommend z1 enterprises, but what sizes am I looking for, and how many links (long) will that make the new chain I'm ordering?

Z1 will help you in figuring out the length of chain. You can go with 520 or 530. If you go with 520 you'll need to go to JT Sprockets website to see what to use. GSX-R and Katana sprockets will work. You just need to be a little careful because some of the GSX-R models used 5 hole patterns on the rear sprockets and from the late '90s on the bolt pattern changed completely. If you go with 520 or 530 use a front sprocket with more teeth than stock. More teeth up front will give the chain an easier path around the sprocket. Just keep the ratio the same as stock unless you want to play with them a little for either quicker acceleration or lower rpm on the highway. You can always get a longer chain than necessary and cut it down to fit your need.
 
Drum brake or disc on the rear? I'm looking at the JT site to see what will work for you. BTW, JT shows you should have a 530 chain and sprockets with a 15/50 sprocket combo for a 3.33 ratio.
 
Disc brake uses 108 links and drum 110. Both use the 15/50 sprocket combo.
 
Your bike came stock with a 530 chain. It was the larger GS bikes that came with 630's.

Stock sprockets were 15 tooth front, 50 tooth rear. 108-110 link chain depending on application.

JT makes affordable sprockets: JTF 513 front, JTR 816 rear.
