    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Please explain the "pri" setting

What exactly is the "pri" setting for on the petcock? I don't have an owners manual but I have heard and read a problem with gas draining into the crankcase.

Thanks for clearing me up on the pri setting.
 
Pri is the prime setting on the petcock. It allows gas to flow freely into the carbs without any vaccum action. Sort of like turning the tap on.

Normally most petcocks work by having the vacuum action from the carbs operate the diaphragm in the petcock which allows fuel into the carb bowls.

So when there's no vaccum there's no fuel.

Prime however allows the fuel to flow freely regardless of what the rest of the system is doing. This could get fuel into the crankcase, because it fills the carb bowls, and possibly overflowing into your engine, etc.

At least that's how I understand it.

Prime is like putting the tap on to manual . Fuel will flow regardless of the engine running. It is not a position for normal use.

Which setting when I park the bike and shut down the engine?
 
I am assuming you have a similar petcock to me (78GS1000). Normally you just leave it on "On", the petrol can only flow whe the bike is running. This uses the main tank while the bike is running. "Reserve" is the last part of the tank, and you can leave it on this while running or when stopped as the vacuum shutoff should control this.

Prime is useful if you have not used the bike for a while and want to get petrol in the carbs before starting. Always put it on "on" in normal use as this prevents flooding when the bike is not running.
