    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Problem registering Canadian bike in the US. May need another frame with US title.

I am new to the GS Resource Forum. This is my problem. I recently bought a 82 GS 1100E from Canada. I can't register or title the bike without a letter of compliance from Suzuki here in the states. After speaking to Suzuki it looks like the letter might cost close to $1000. This cost is crazy and not even an option for me. I was wondering the year and model frames I could use? And put my parts on that bike with a good state side title. The motor on the bike is a 750 of the same year. Could a frame from a bike with a smaller motor work or would it have to be of the same size bike? I failed to do enough research and I am now in a bind. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I live about an hour northeast of Pittsburgh.
 
The tags are not problem. The problem is the $1000 fee for the compliance letter from Suzuki. I need this before I can do anything. Unless I can find another option.
 
How did the DMV find out the bike came from Canada?
I'm no legal eagle but they normaly take what you say as the truth. I would wait a few weeks and go to a different office and register the bike as a US model.

YEah that 1000 fee is crazy, you call back to get a different rep to see if you can get it for free?

suzuki sent me a letter regarding my bike for free, say that my bike was to spec for a 83 gs850

it wasn't a canadian bike but I was trying to get historic tags for it

Just throwing things out here,
how about an assembled title? or buy an frame and title for an 82-83 gs1100 on e-bay might take some time but it can be done.

sounds like you need to call, write, e-mail suzuki if someone got it done from them for nothing.

I have not tried at the DMV. This information is from customs. They were not going to let me bring it into the states without this letter. They let me take it anyways but told me that I would need this letter and then have it endorsed by customs to get the bike registered. Right now getting a another frame sounds so much easier.
 
Does PA require a title on that year bike? I would go the DMV and ask them too. It may not be that big of deal. Some states are more lenient on these things.

I can register that bike here with a Bill of Sale written on a napkin.

Here's your solution...have katoranger( please :-D ) register it for ya, and then he "sells" it back to you...with title...or find somewhere else there is a "no title" state... I know Rhode Island isn't after so many years, and CT no title needed after 20...

Then what is the problem. You have the bike in the states now, go down and register it as a US model. Know one but you will know unless you tell them.


BTW, a napkin will do here in California too.

I live in PA and the DMV does require a title. Try International Title Service. A friend of mine got a title for his bike that way and I will be doing the same soon with a project bike I just got without a title. Your total cost should be under $200 including getting the PA tags. You should have no problems at all getting a clear PA title. Where near Pittsburgh are you located? I'm in the heart of Pittsburgh.
 
Is that true that in Connecticut you dont need a title after 20? I have a 1982 GS750EZ and the guy i got it from hasnt given me the title or a bill of sale yet. he works with my dad and i got the bike for free so am i in a bind here? I got it running and the guys not a jerk so hes not going to call it in as stolen or demand it back. what do i do with it if i want to sell it or register it?
 
International Title Service gets you a Maine registration and plate. I don't know about Conneticut.
 
I live just a few minutes from Indiana, Pa. I am going to try this International Title Service. Is this something you do at the DMV or an outside source? If that doesn't work maybe I will have to get someone else top title it for me. The bill of sale even says Canada on it. I guess I could make another one if I needed to.

I just spent some time at your states DMV web site, they sure make it difficult to get a clear answer. Seems one of the requirements you need is an EPA sticker saying the bike meets US smog rules. Does you bike have one. Mine is under the seat (a 1983 GS1100ED). Also you may have an out if the bike is more than 25 years old as this does not apply. It does appear you can use a notory service to apply for a title, they sould be able to get you on the road, just don't tell them the bike came from Canada and get another bill of sell to use.

OK step by step for PA with ITS.
PA needs a title or something to register it so you need ITS or someone else to get you the paperwork...a bill of sale won't cut it.
Go to the ITS website and print out the forms. When my friend did his, he needed to get insurance on the bike before he could start the process. Go to Bikeline.com. The insurance is cheap and you can do it all online. Fill out the paper work and get what needs to be notorized notorized. Call ITS to verify the fees..they might have changed. Then just send everything in. In a couple of weeks you'll get a Maine plate and registration. Take the registration, your insurance info, and your checkbook to your local notary and in a few weeks you will have a clean PA title. You should get your temporary registration and plate when you send in for the title. A lot easier tha I just made it sound. Good luck. PM me if you have any other questions.
