DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

My 1979 gs850 turns on n runs but runs horible...i tested coils n seem like they are bad...my question is can the bike still start even if coils are bad..?

Thanx for quick responce...i tested w. Multimetter at primary i have 4.5 and secondary put multimetter at 20k n it reads nothing it just stays on the 1 thats already on the multimetter..i tested bike today because started riding bad n popping and it boged down few times on my way home and some times it stayed like it barely wanted to go..

Try pulling your plugs and with the leads attached and plug grounded onto the engine, check for spark at the plugs. This will validate whether or not the coils are firing the plugs.

Next, I would pull the plug caps and trim the HT leads back a quarter of an inch and make sure you have spark at the end of the lead without a cap. Do this for all 4 and also check the resistance of the caps. You are looking for approximately 5 ohms from where the plug wire goes into the cap and where the cap goes onto the plug.
These plug caps go bad occasionally.

Coils often get falsely blamed for running problems. The 1979 GS850 has points so I'd check/replace them along with the condenser if there is any questions (use OEM parts). Next, check to be sure the coils are getting at least 11 volts. Resistance build up in connectors often reduces voltage. Then check the plug caps for resistance. You can unscrew the caps from the wires and snip off 1/4" of wire and screw the caps back on. If everything checks out and still no love, then look at the coils.

K..just did and all 4 have spark..but qhy will the test read nothing at secondary

Ditch the fuel filter and give it a try...

If it's a lurching feeling, does your bike have points? Could be one of the condensers went bad.

EDIT: Just noticed Nessim suggested this - did you look into your condensers?

I found out that it has electronic ignition n not the original..so now what..

Post photos of ignition? Dyna made a number of different units over the years. Dyna S being the newest.

Best way to show photos here is to get a 3rd party photo hosting site and then link the

Might be worth checking out the coil supply plugs.
They can look clean but you have to consider corrosion inside.
Mine were bad. You would be running fine then chugging, sputtering and back to life again or maybe not.

I havent had a chance to get around to it...may be this weekend...but i had another question about size of jets in carb..the suzuki webside says 102 and carb does has 102 and 15 pilot...where will i order jets from other then suzuki...i have bought from jetsrus befor for atvs...but i dnt see the pilot that small 15?
