    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Removing tach gear

Is there a trick to removing the tach drive gear on a 79 gs750e?
I removed the one screw that holds the clip in in the slot.
The putter ring with the seal in it cam off, but looks like the casting broke flush with the gear still inside.
 
Does it look like this? Not sure about the 750 but this worked on an 1100G.



Try clamping a set of locking pliers on the end of the gear and pulling it out. You may have to pry against the pliers. I used a wood block to protect the cooling fins and pried against the engine with a flat bar. Slow steady pressure and it'll pop out.



Then you're left with this. It's maybe 50 bucks for a new sleeve, drive gear and a couple of seals.

 
Looks like I am pulling the valve cover.... Thought I was not putting too much pressure but apparently city did and broke the steno off the gear.
Is it feasible to reuse the valve cover gasket and am I looking at tons of hate pulling the cover off with the engine still in the bike?

It's a crap shoot on the gasket, depending on how old it is and if any grease was used on install. I have reused gaskets several times with no issues, but that is not always how it goes. If you don't know how old it is and what shape it is in just order a new one and start fresh. Of course you can pull the valve cover off in the frame, how else do you check valve clearances?

Good point on the valve clearance.
This bike keeps kicking my butt. Little things turning into big jobs...
 
Just pulled and replaced one. I'd skip pulling on the gear itself and tap it out from the inside the cover once removed. I've had 2x fail in 12 months and finally replaced with the new p/n. This gasket (oem, greased) has had about 6-8 removals without leaking/breaking. 30 minute job.

Edit: having said that, I'm probably hosed on next valve cover removal.
