A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Rev Counter - needle slow to return / stuck

Lube it and all the others too! You can go budget by cutting the corner of a ziplock bag, put the cable through hole then seal up bag/cable entry area with a rubber band. Put lubricant in bag hang it with bag on top and let gravity work the oil through.

I use one of the needle type systems to lube cables & these ones have already been lubed....

Something like this

Probem with cable isnt going to cause the tack to "hangup and go down slow". Isntr anyway for the cable to keep spinning after the engine rpms goes down.
Problem with cable usually cause the gauge to jump around or stay at zero.

Yeah that's what I figured... :D

I've never been inside one of these gauges so I can't really decide how it might be hanging up. I wonder if there is some grease in there that may have hardened with lack of use & perhaps with some use will free off again.... ?

I gave away the spare I had a while back. Murphy's law! :D

Before opening it up, give it some time to free itself and try a 'dry ultrasonic' clean.
Take a vibrating power tool like a sander or jigsaw and let it do magic on the tacho housing.

Then carefully tip the contents into a plastic bowl. :smug:

From my memory of the ones I've [usually unsuccessfully] entered, there is often a ball of what I presume is silicone gel around one of the pivot points which serves to keep the needle from oscillating about. This can get pretty slow over time but usage seems to free it up. Probably depolymerizes the gel.

If you have an electric drill or impact tool and can find a #2 Robertson bit [square] or equivalent to spin the shaft you can feed it bursts of revs to exercise it up and down without having to run the motor. I have a disassembled one in the shop that I can look at or photograph, but you really don't want to take one apart unless it's an autopsy.

Now I can ride it... trying to free it off just gives me an excuse to ride it more! :)
