Rolling in first gear

Well rode my bike to work the other day felt like the chain was slipping so stopped at the hobby shop on base and tightned it up. Rode it home that night and it sounded like a box of rocks being rattled around next to my ankles. Went to push it in the garage today and had no trouble pushing it while it was in first gear. Have not taken anything apart yet but any ideas....It sure don't sound good.

I would put it on the centerstand or rear motorcycle stand and start to take off the back wheel... i would inspect each chain link and then just check the entire rear end of the bike! could be the chain hitting your chain guard, you very possibly could need a new chain because the older/worse they get no matter how many times you adjust it, it will need adjusment constantly and instantly afterwards... i dont know but i would certaintly take a GOOD look !

Dittos -- I bet there's a new chain and sprockets in your near future.

Talk to Jeff at Z1 Enterprises about a 530 conversion. You have to CALL for this -- there are far too many details involved in getting the gear rations right along with the correct spacer and such.

What exactly is a 530 conversion and what would it do for me?

Many of the older GS bikes came with a chain and sprockets of the size known as 630. These are larger and heavier than the more modern bikes use.

Today's 530 chains are easily strong enough to use on our bikes and are more common and so less expensive.

The conversion is a one time process where you choose which 530 (or 520) chain you want to use ..

Z1 Enterprises and Jeff are very helpful in this as they will ask you a few questions and .. poof .. you are buying everything you need to painlessly move into the 530.

Saves money .. more readily available .. saves weight.

Of course once you get your "numbers", reordering online is a simple matter.

I do know that a spent chain and sprockets will cause that rock sounding noise,but my question for you is (let the experts chime in)how are you rolling the bike in first gear?I would also check the clutch,plates,basket,cable not in that order.Just has me thinking,the other posters have you on the right track.

Unless I'm mistaken Redneck has a GS550L,don't think those came with a 630 chain.Pretty sure my 81 GS650E was 530 OEM.
