    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Rubber pads between fins

I've tried doing a search, just didn't find to much info. Can anyone tell me the reason for the rubber pads between the cylinder fins? Mine have all gotten so hard they just fell out. Are they something thats needs to be replaced for vibration or something? Or should I just forget them?

That is the primary reason they exist.

Some people also have the opinion that they help re-direct some air for cooling,
but the rubber pieces don't seem large enough to do that job.

Anybody have an opinion if they really make a difference? Don't mean to sound cheap but it's 40.00 to replace them.

Back in the 1970s they started getting put there to stop the cooling fins from vibrating and adding to overal vehilce noise produced.
 
They were put between the fins to dampen the "head ring" produced when the valves land back on the valve seats. If you've ever heard an old 60's 650cc Triumph, you'll know how loud head ring can be.

Take 'em out and enjoy the sound! It'll probably cool better, too.

No way I'd pay $40 for some chunks of rubber. You might be able to make some out of an old tire if you really want them.

Try Motorsports super center for your replacements. They are approximately 2.50 each pad.

For your type bike they superseded Suzuki P/N: 11251-36500
For my bike they are 2.06

I hav'nt had any in for the last 2 years and there is no fin ringing I can make out. Save your money, Ted
 
They not only stop ringing but also dampen vibration which causes the fins to work harden and break off for little or no reason. Ever see a bike with broken fins that the owner swears he never laid down? This is why. For a couple bucks apiece I'd replace 'em. Just my .02.........8-[
