Sanding down clear coat

I just bought a maier fairing off DDANIELS and I need to sand down the clear coat to get the pin stripping off so that I can re-paint it. I bought some 1000 grit sand paper and some 2000 grit sand paper.

I guess what I need to know is if that is god enough to use to get the clear coat off. Just dont want to mess up the plastic on the fairing.

Yeah 1000 should be fine.

1000 or 2000 is to fine i use that when i buff out flaws,220 320 or 400 will work better

By sandpaper I assume you mean auto body wet\dry paper.

use it wet its like magic.

Not to get weird but you can make yer nails all shiny with the 2k paper.

I told some gals about it once and I may have caused a momentary drop in the sale of nail files. Knowledge is power.

As obgrayone said, 1K is so fine that it will take you forever and waste a lot of sandpaper. I'd start with 400 to remove the striping, then bring back the shine with 600, 1K, 1500, 2K. Always use it wet so it doesn't clog. To make sure you are getting a consistent surface, it helps to sand each grit crossways: L-R at 400, then Up-Down at 600 until all the 400-size scratches are gone, then L-R...

Not that I'm a professional painter - I'm not - but this method works for me.

Also, if you didn't know this already, be sure to use a sanding block with this to keep the surface level. That rubber block from AutoZone is totally worth the $10.
