A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

The bike is a '81 850GL basket case that's coming back to life. The battery holder is stock with the battery band hooking under a lip at the back. What does the band hang onto at the front?

I looked at the schematics for battery and electrics but don't see anything but the band.

on my 81 gs650 the band on the front is to hold it from falling out when the bike is leaned over. Put the box and battery in the bike, and then fine the clips to hook the band onto, should literally be next to the battery on either side. IF you really can't figure it out, put the battery in, put the band across the front and see if it has anything to hook on to that's close the length of the band.

Well, I did all that and I can't figure it out. The pic shows the front of the battery box. Where on that pic of the front of the box does the battery band attach? There isn't any lip there, only on the back. The band is to keep the battery from bouncing around and cracking or breaking on the inside as well as the outside.

There is a plate that bolts to the front (actually the left side) of the battery box. It holds the starter solenoid, fuse box and the ignitor. At the top of that plate is the hook for the battery strap.

It's item #17 on the ELECTRICAL fiche. ( click link)

Thank you, sir. I didn't understand how it fit together cuz I'm working my way thru the electrics right now (only found one broken wire...the rest look surprisingly good). The fuse box plate is on my work bench for re-assembly...so I didn't yet put 2 and 2 together (no pun intended). That's enough for me for the day. Thanks again! Much appreciated.
