Sonic Blue Pearl..your opinions

As you know i am hoping to find a mix code or have someone scan an OEM 78 1000C Blue piece. In the mean time I got a can of a Ford color called Sonic Blue Pearl to shoot a test spot.

I think its just a little too blue. Maybe my paint guy can tweek it to be a little more darker..sort of like a grapish blue?? What do you guys think?? Maybe just a tad more on the purplish side maybe??? This is with 2 coats of clear so its representative of exactly what the Sonic Blue would like like on my bike.

Should note this is in direct sunlight. The little bit at the top in the trees shade is darker of course. I will take the panel inside and post another pic out of the sun for comparison.

Out of direct sunlight...........little fuzzy but you get the idea.

Sonic Blue was used by Ford around 2003 -2004. It's a gorgeous color that really can't be appreciated in pictures. I had a friend with a Sonic Blue Cobra. One of the rarer of the colors Cobras came in.

If you want an identical color to what Suzuki put on the bike, by all means keep searching. If you don't mind it being off a bit, you can't go wrong with Sonic Blue.

Im gonna see if my buddy that manages our local paint supply house can tint it a bit darker. Obviously the ideal thing would be someone has an OEM part that they will scan for me..and a few others that I know are looking for the same color.

I just remember the OEM color being sort of in between this Sonic Blue and a slightly Grape like color.

So I had the idea to spray a bunch of the Sonic Blue Pearl into a mix cup and add a dose of black to deepen the blue a little. Loaded the gun and shot it on a well cleaned old real estate sign. Not quite a grape color..more of a deeper purplish blue. Looks real close to what i remember the blue C model to be. Definitely darker than the untinted Sonic Blue.

Many auto paint stores can use a paint scanner to record the color and then come up with a recipe and mix the shade you need. This process doesn't work too well on 3 part paints where there is a base coat, like silver, then a candy or metallic coat and then the clear. (hope I got the terminology right on the paints). I had this done on a Kaw Nomad as I put a trunk on it and the color got scanned and didn't come out exactly the same as they just mixed a single part base coat. If your paint is a single part base it could come out fine. Another way to get the color is to go into a dealership auto body and get them to let you sit there and match a paint swatch (you bring in) to their paint chip books. The downside here is that when a vehicle is in the sun, its paint often looks different than the chip.

Look at early 80's Ford midnight metallic blue, I had my 78 tank painted with it in 86 and it was a near perfect match. This is going off my memory so no promises! It was the body man at a Ford dealership I worked at who choose the Color and sprayed it For me.

That Color above is way to light.

Man, I would love to come across a Was Cooley, always loved that bike. hmm, need to paint my 550, naw, would'nt do the original justice.
