DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I want to wire a starter button on my bike . My wire colors, do not match the wire diagrams for 1980 gs1000. Example, I have a small white with green tracer coming off my starter solnoid into the wireing loom. The diagrams show a green with yellow. Due to my bikes mix and match parts I may not have the proper loom for all I know. All I really need is to get a hot 12v wire with a button to connect and break the power to the nonpowered side of the solinoid right? Thanks Mike

You sort of have the right idea.

There are two large terminals on the solenoid. One of them goes straight to the battery, the other goes straight to the starter. There is a smaller terminal, which, on the standard solenoid, has a wire soldered to it. That wire is yellow, with a green stripe, it may have faded a bit and appears to be white/green. What you are trying to do is to connect a momentary-contact switch (button) from a switched 'hot' wire to that yellow/green wire.

Note that the metal case of the stock solenoid needs to be grounded. If the solenoid has been replaced, the smaller terminal will most-likely not have a soldered wire, but will use ring terminals on the wire. There also might be one or two small terminals. If there is just one, the metal case needs to be grounded, like the stock solenoid. If there are two small terminals, one of them will connect to your start button, the other will need to be grounded.

solenoid bad no stock starter button

solenoid bad no stock starter button

I bought a Ford solenoid from Rockauto. com $4.99 plus shipping $12 bucks total. $10.00 starter button from Auto Zone. Hooked up the solenoid like normal. Found a unused 12volt wire, hot when the ignition key is turned on. Installed the Button between that wire and a wire to the S terminal (S- must stand for small), on solenoid. Drilled a hole in right side cover and mounted the button. Works Fine
