    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Starter won't stop!

I went to start the 650g and the starter wouldn't stop cranking. I tried the kill switch, key and then pulled all the fuses. Finally ran to the Tool box and unbolted the battery ground.

Where do I start looking to fix this?

That's really weird. The kill switch and the key should have both stopped the starter. Sounds like someone needs to check their wiring harness for previous owners messing with it. Also, check the contacts on the starter button to make sure it isn't stuck closed.

I would start at the solenoid. It has two large posts on it. One goes to the battery, one goes to the starter. It will also have a spade connector on it. This goes to the starter button. Get it cranking again and unplug the spade connector. If it continues to crank it is your starter or your solenoid. If it stops cranking it is in your wiring harness. Also, if it continues to crank, try tapping the solenoid with a solid object (I use a brass hammer, but not everyone has one laying around). There is a set of magnetically activated points inside the solenoid and they may be getting stuck in the closed position.
While it sounds like your solenoid is stuck, you won't know until you run this simple test.

I would start at the solenoid, too, but not every bike has a spade connector for the starter button wire. That might be something that started in '83, as I know that none of my bikes have it, they are all '82 or older.

If you find that you need a new solenoid, you can find one at Lowe's or Home Depot, in the lawn mower parts department. Get one for a lawn tractor, they are the same size and capacity, it will bolt right it. Might have a spade connector on it, so you will have to cut the yellow/green wire off your old solenoid and put a connector on it. If it has TWO spade connectors, connect one of them to ground, the other to the yellow/green wire.

Trying to start it with a low battery could have possibly pulled enough current to weld the solenoid contacts.
 
Another place to look is in the harness to see if your starter switch wires fused together. It has happened................:-\\\

Another vote for suspecting the solenoid itself.

Actaully I think what you did with the kill switch-key-fuses pretty much proved it.

The contacts inside the solenoid are stuck together.

Many folks have used general purpose solenoid like Steve is suggesting.

When messing with the solenoid, make sure you get the ground wire back on the battery box (if not it could effect the R/R). That ground wire is there for the solenoind AND the R/R.

agreed 100%. The only way the starter can get power is through the solenoid and if you shut the bike off (causing no power to go through the rest of the harness) then it surely has to be the solenoid, unless you're entire harness is botched. So, that is the very best place to start and also the easiest fix.

Starter

so I think I figured out what happened. It isn't starting good ever since carbs were stripped and not vaccume synced (only visual). It was lower on juice from trying to start it and the solenoid stuck. Fresh charge and it started normal. Still needs sync...

So,, solenoid was stuck, and now it is not?

Yup.


Solenoids are supposed to close contacts when electricity is run through them, and release contact the moment the power is shut off.

If it has begun sticking, it is time to replace it, because it will continue to fail.

Almost any 12 volts solenoid will work, as long as you can fasten it in place, and the cost will likely be less than ten dollars....spend it and be happy.
