DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Stator and R/R wiring question????

I'm in the process of replacing my stator and R/R on my '83 GS1100ED. According to the wiring diagram in the Suzuki Service Manual two wires (white/blue, yellow) go directly from the stator to the R/R. The third wire (white/blue) goes into the wiring harness, through some box that appears to be nothing more than a connector, changes color to white/red, then goes back to the R/R. Is this 'box' something more than a connector? If not, what's the purpose of sending this wire all over the bike just to end up back at the R/R with the other two wires? Can I eliminate the additional path and wire the third wire directly to the R/R like the other two?

Thanks,
Joe

Yes you can Joe. I have done exactly that on my 83 1100ED, my 1150, the 750 and now the 450. The only thing you will need to make sure you do is always run with the headlight on because with three stator wires always supplying the R/R, not having the consumption of the headlight would result in too much charging current having to be diverted to the heatsink fins on the R/R.

You and Earl are exactly right.

On some GS models, this extra mile or so of wire actually runs the headlight. On some later models, it simply runs up to the headlight shell, where the wires are connected together inside a protective clear sleeve. That's the way my 83 GS850 was wired, anyway. Pretty pointless, really.

Feel free to connect these two wires together as you described. You will have the satisfaction of an immediate .002 volt increase in charging voltage, as well as the pride inherent in completing an important step on the path of true GS enlightenment and inner peace.

One of our greatest principles is to question EVERYTHING you see in the electrical system of a 20+ year old motorcycle. Be the wire. Become an electron, and strive to understand the path you must take...
