A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

how do you get that stinkin-stator cover off the side of the bike, i have removed all the bolts holding it in and its still stuck on there good.
I looked in the shop manual and it says there is a 'strong magnetic field' that holds it on tightly and prying it off might damage it. so, how do you get the thing off?!?
i sure wasn't successful just pulling, there has to be a trick to it.

also, i am under the impression that both the stator and the regulator are behind that cover, am i right? (1978 GS750)

i am also under the impression that in order to properly diagnose which bits of my charging system are at fault (stator, R/R, etc) i need to get at the leads of the stator and R/R directly, right?

You don't need to remove the stator cover unless you are replacing it. The stator wires come out by the starter if you follow them it will lead you to the regulator Not sure on yours, mine is mounted to the bottom of the battery box Yours maybe mounted to the side of the battery box near the starter soloniod. Go to the garage section and check out the stator papers

The regulator won't be under the cover. Not sure of the exact location on your bike, but it most likely will be under one of the side covers near the battery. The stator leads should be able to be disconnected up under the fuel tank. Three wires coming out of the stator cover then running up under the tank. As for getting the stator cover off you need to tap around it with a rubber mallet. The magnetic hold isn't all that strong, once you break the gasket seal it will come off fairly easily.

On my bike there is a pin on the left side that is used as to locate the cover correctly. Check your manual to see if there is pin.

Gently tap the cover with a rubber mallet and pull gently it should come off unless the paper gasket is so gone it's stuck to the cover.

The stator wires work their way through the starter cavity and up to the battery box area. I've seen the R/Rs attached behind the frame covers and to the bottom of the battery box.

and for the record, it has a strong magnetic attraction.. that's why it seems like it's stuck on there.
