    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Stator need to be insulated?

Hey all,

I am in the process of troubleshooting my electrical, trying to find a short. I have covered most of the visible wires so figured it was time to check the stator out. The wires look good; however, I was expecting the coils to be covered in insulation ... and there doesn't appear to be any. There is small traces of a clear coating, but certainly doesn't appear to be complete coverage.

The stator itself looks pretty good, are there some stators have insulation and others that don't?

They have a coating on all the wires. take it to a shop that rebuilds alternators/starters/generators and see how much to have it re-coated, or there is a post in the "stator papers" http://www.thegsresources.com/garage/gs_statorrewind.htm that iirc has a section on coating the stator. possibly check that for some sources for the coating material and diy.

In addition to the insulation on the wire itself, the windings are also coated on many stators, but not all. This is a new stator with the windings coated.

How does your stator test? This one did not test well at all.

As you can see, this stator got hot, melted the coating and the insulation on the windings, and turned into a hunk of copper instead of a stator.

Thanks basscliff, I would try to help by posting a picture of my stator ... but looks to be harder than it should be. I am specifically talking about the coils, my stator doesn't appear to have ANY insulation ... but in looking at your 'bad' stator, which clearly has some problematic areas, mine is uniform ... so there must be some clear coat on it?
 
It will have a red/brown coating on the bare copper wires, post a picture of it if un-certain.

Hi Mr. bdub416,

You can either "attach" a single picture to your post, or host your pictures on a web service like Photobucket and link to them like I did above. The details are all on my webpage.

For you IE users (that's Internet Explorer) you can simply right-click, copy and paste any picture (hosted on an internet server) right into your post.
