A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Ok, Ive installed several upgrades on my 79 GS850G. Dyna S ignition, Dyna coils, new plugs wires. Heres my problem, cylinders 1 and 2 seem to be working fine 3 and 4 seem really slow to catch up. now I have 1 and 4 connected to one coil and 2 and 3 connected to the other. Maybe Im missing something simple. Ive checked spark on all plugs good strong fat and blue. Once more I must call upon the collective wisdom of the gang. Thanks, Mike

You pretty much can rule out ignition. Since ignition is paired 1-4 and 2-3 and you have a pairing of 3-4 it ain't electrical.

If carbs are good (check the plugs how they look) maybe a head gasket leak?

Carbs also were recent cleaned thoroughly with new o-rings from a member here. Its running on all cylinders it just seems 3 and 4 just are slower to warm up. #1 plug looks to be a bit rich, 2 is dead perfect 3 and 4 look good a bit perhaps lean. After letting run for a bit things seemed to even out. Bike got an overhaul basically recently. Valves adjusted as they were all 3 to 4 times specs.. new R/R new stator as well. when i checked cold compression #1 was at 130 while other 3 hovered around 120. kinda on the low end also that i had all oil out may have also played a slight factor. Slowly getting gremlins worked out.

you dont sound too far off; what are you using to measure the temperature?

no temp measuring means aside from wetted finger tips. (not the safest means i know). rode it a turn or 2 around the parking lot an about a half mile up the road and back and as i was returning it seemed to be bogging down after i down shifted and rolled throttle. seemed similar to experiences I had when my battery wasnt charging. yet after i parked it ran and idled perfectly at about 1000 rpm. A lot to wrap my brain around lately as Im a tattooist not a mechanic. But slowly but surely. Thanks to this forum my ugly but beautiful gs850 moved under its own power:cool:.

(me thinks now with recent finds i may have improperly located this thread...:-k)

Maybe your floats are sticking on 3 and 4? I've had that happen on mine, header pipe for that cylinder was really slow to warm up, tapped the float bowl covers a bit here and there and it seemed to clear it up. but usually what then is happening you can feel the difference when running the bike. That or maybe your floats are way off. How doe the bike start up? any boggin' on exceleration? any other symptoms? any ways sounds like you're well on your way to having a great running bike.

Bike is very difficult to start cold. Unless Ive had it running within past cpl hours at most. Float heights set according to specs. Tried tapping float bowls and that seemed to correct it so maybe they were just sticking slightly. Now it just seems to be electrical gremlins. Unfortunately previous owner had some "custom" wiring all over the place so its difficult to track down everything. colors dont necessarily match, Ive got wires that are just not connected to anything but still hot, fuses to big, things not run to fuses. Kind of a nightmare really because electricity may as well be magic :D

You said the valves were adjusted, as they were all WAY too loose. Have you gone back to check them? :-k

Tight valves are a common cause for hard starting. It is possible that there was some crud built up in the valve seats that caused the extra clearance. Now, after a little bit of run time, the crud is missing and your valves are now too tight. :o

.

First thing to do is check and make sure you have 12 v going to the coils !!!!! Have you tried to adjust the carb mixture or do a carb sync ? Do you have a complete functioning air box ? If you still have problems I would go back and clean the carbs again
130lbs comp is fine !!!
