So I THOUGHT id narrowed the charging issue on my new to me 1000G down to the stator being bad. I got good voltage from it across the three legs, (50ishV at 3K) but it was showing some resistance, or 0.00 resistance rather than infinate. So, figuring that yes indeed, this must be the problem, and after consulting with Griffin, I yanked that stator cover off there to replace it. Well, on a whim after i pulled the cover off, with the stator still IN the cover, i tested it again. INFINITE resistance....WTF??? This is the kinda stuff that makes me wanna bang my head against the wall....anyone??

Any chance 1 of the wires was being pinched between the cover and black wh.en the cover was on ? Happened to me the PO had replaced the stator when putting the cover on he shorted out 1 wire, I took it apart found the frayed wire taped it up and had a new stator hope your as lucky good luck

If it is the stock stator, and at 5grand it is still 50VAC then the stator is dying. If it boosts up to 80or so VAC then the stator may be ok.

You crack me up Josh! I know many excellent mechanics who hate electrical stuff. I have an electrical background but am not as good mechanically. It just comes down to basic troubleshooting. Something is different when the stator cover is mounted. I'd agree that a pinched wire or maybe a wire with the insulation worn off is the problem. Are there any connectors between the stator and the point where you tested the AC voltage with the cover installed? Does the short occur if the cover is held in place and not screwed down? Check the insulation on the stator windings and see if some is worn off and shorting out when the cover is installed.

Thanks,
Joe

Joe, Nope, straight line test. I did find it rather difficult to pull the wires back thru the starter housing, so im hoping something is up there. I will run it back thru, and install the cover and check it again. 50V at 3KRPM sounds like its working, but i was getting NOTHING at the battery. I still as of yet have not ruled out the R/R either, tho its a newer "Duaneage" style unit..havent seen one go bad yet, but there is a first for everything i suppose.

If you are getting 50 VAC across all three legs of the stator, your stator is ok. You either have a bad r/r, or an open somewhere. Make sure you have a good ground connection out to the the r/r mounting plate. The connections can become rusted and corroded, and act like an open in a circuit. Remember an open has infinitely high resistance. A bad connection can have high resistance, dropping almost all of the voltage across it. I ran another ground wire from the mounting plate to the batttery ground, just to make sure I had a good ground connection.

Well, we tested the R/R, at least the diodes..everything checked out there. However, I did find that whomever wired this new R/R in, did a **** poor job of it. The connectors werent connected very well. The stator will get soldered in this time, and i will use better connections at everything else. That may have been the problem all along.

R/r

R/r

When I bought my GS550 the P.O. had done some work to it. He hooked up the R/R ground to the positive terminal of the battery. Fried the S*** out of it. Had to replace it. Luckily I found one for CHEAP A** money. Hooked it up (correctly), tested it, and Bang! Perfect!

Well, i got it charging...about 13.5VAC or so at the batt at 4K RPM. Idling at 12.5 or so, so im good with that for now. I dunno what it was, really, but we just went thru and replaced all the connectors, and ran a new power wire to the battery from the R/R, bypassing all the BS in the harness. Ran it with 12ga wire too.. So far so good, moving on to the OTHER annoying thing...the rear MC that wont prime...LOL

is the explanation on how to test a r/r in the stator papers? I have a honda r/r i want to test but it's not on the bike. Can this be done with the r/r not on the bike?

the dead test is quite simple, but to test it otherwise it has to be on the bike and under power.

The dead test is simply looking for consistancy betwen the diodes. Yes, its all in the stator papers, but this will at least give you a clue as to whether or not its worth wiring up. This is MY understanding of the test, and mind you, I HATE electrical work...lol

If your multimeter has a "diode" test setting, set it there. If not, set it on 2k ohms or whathaveyou..anything above 200. I cant remember which is which so reverse it if im wrong, but you're not concerned about numbers so much as you are about conisitancy

With the red lead on the red wire, use the black lead to test the three stator wires coming from the R/R. I believe this test should reveal INFINATE resistance on each leg. Now, with the black lead on the red wire, test each stator wire from the RR, you should get 550-600 somewhere in there. Again, what number it is isnt so much important as it is that ALL of them are the same. Now, repeat these same tests, only instead of the red wire, use the black wire. Like I said, i may have the results reversed, but you see what i mean im sure..

I'll try it. I've done something like that before but with mixed results. I think my number were around 400-500. The system was not charging well. I put on a 2nd honda r/r and that fixed everything. I did do the diode test on the 2nd one and i think the numbers were higher but not but a lot, maybe 100 more points.

Right, well again, its my understanding that its not so much what the numbers are, but more that all three legs are the same numbers...

maybe thats a quesiton i'll ask duaneage. There must be some cutoff level that determines if the number are within spec. or not. Maybe he'll chime in here at some point and let us know.
