    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Throttle plates STUCK

I'm in the process of rebuilding the carbs. #1 has been soaking in Gunk for 3 days now and the throttle plate is still stuck. Of all 4, 1 and 3 are stuck closed and 2 and 4 open fine and dandy. Anyone know how to fix this without damaging the carb?
 
Are these CV carbs and are you refering to the butterfly plates? If so, very strange that some carbs are stuck open since spring force normally forces the butterflys closed.
 
yes CV carbs. the plates are stuck closed.

im actually in VA.
 
I am in the same process and had the same problem (carb 1 throttle stuck). I ended up taking off the throttle disk and removing the shaft. The shaft was all gunked up. The seals on the end of the shaft may need replacing now.
 
im afraid of breaking them if i push them by the disk. where does the shaft come out?
 
First thing I had to do was spray with carb cleaner because you will have to rotate to remove disk. You have to remove the aluminum cap off the side opposite the spring. It has a clip ring and washer. You need to remove the throttle disk first by removing the screws on the shaft (inside body). Make sure you have the correct driver since these screws round out easy. I found this out. Look at the GS650G manual on the bikecliff website. It details the removal (shows a nut on the end though)

To remove the throttle shaft, you need to separate the rack, then remove the two screws that hold the plate to the shaft, then slide the shaft out the side.
NOTE: the two screws will be very hard to remove as the ends are peened (flared out) so that they don't come loose accidentally.
Because of that, they might also be hard to get started to put them back in.

I was going to just use thread lock when I put in new screws. Do i need to do anything else?
 
I'd use red locktite and tighten the screws are much as possible when you put them back.

I'd also replace all the end seals while you are at it.

Please report back on how hard it is to get the screws out. You may have to use some heat.

Personally I would forget about removing the throdle blades at the moment. Get some PB Blaster & spray both sides of the shaft. Do it a few time and let soak for an hour between applications. Then try and turn
 
mine were stuck what worked for me turn the carbs on their side spray them with blaster till it puddles where the shaft goes thru the body .walk away for an hour or 2 then turn them over do it again on the other side . the still might seem tight work it a little then repeat the process. if you pull the blades you better have new seals plus drilling out the screws can be a royal pain
 
moderate heating with a blow dryer will usually loosen the goo enough to get it moving, then the gumout can penetrate and wash it out.
 
I was able to free up carbs 2, 3 and 4 without removing throttle disks. Ordered new shaft seals for carb 1. Cleaned carbs and replaced all o-rings. Setting bowl float heights and was hoping to try putting back together and try to start bike this weekend, but bikebandit back ordered the seals. I noticed all of the pilot screws were factory set at around 1/4 turn from seated. I have been reading 1.5 to 2.5 turns from seated in all the forums and carb tuning posts? Is this just an emissions vs performance difference.
