Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

throttle return spring too stiff

This is a problem I've always had on the 550. My arm gets sore after 30 minutes if I don't
use a throttle rocker device.

This is not a problem on my other two bikes so I know its not my pathetic girly-arms.

Any advice? Replacement spring?

More likely it's the cable.
They wear inside, sometimes even with no visible wear they are very hard to pull, when you take them off the bike they seem perfect.

Check and lube your cable for starters.

What about your grips? They have a lot to do with throttle pull. If you get a larger diameter grip it's an easier pull, not to mention comfort.

Boing!

Boing!

About 5 or 6 years ago, I remember Earl mentioning that he had changed the spring on his carbs to one that was easier to use. Maybe he can tell you what he switched to.:-\\\

Cable is fine. Recently lubed and it rolls smooth when the carbs are off.

I tried a pair of foam grips which were a bit larger but actually I am going
back to the factory grips as the foamies tend to slip - but this might just
be the spring tension again.

I wonder if I can unhook the spring and unwind it one turn. Is that possible
or would it just be too loose?

The carbs are coming off in the next month or so for new boots so this
would be a good time to fix this PITA problem.

thanks for your help!!!

Your grips shouldn't slip. Get some grip adhesive.

As for the spring I have no experience with that mod.

The point I was trying to make is that an internally worn cable will pull smoothly with no load on it, off the carbs all seems well.
With a little bit of spring tension the cable binds up, gets very hard to move. I believe what is happening is that the inside of the housing gets a groove worn in it, when the cable falls into the groove by just a little bit of tension it locks up.
I just replaced throttle cables on two bikes, both were worn this way, the cables still seem perfect when they are off the bike, on both bikes it was very hard to open the throttle, with new cables it is easy as could be.
